Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) A/H5N1 has affected three million 933 thousand 499 birds, most of them laying eggs, which means 0.19 percent of the national inventory in 17 commercial poultry production units from eight entities in the country: six in Jalisco, another six in Yucatán, four in Sonora and one in Nuevo León.
In addition, four backyard farms located in Chiapas, Chihuahua, Mexico State and Oaxaca were affected.
For this reason, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development delivered 41 million 351 thousand doses against avian influenza A/H5N1 for laying birds, progenitors and breeders in Jalisco, Yucatán, Coahuila, Sonora, Durango, Nayarit and Nuevo León.
In Jalisco, an entity in which 54 percent of the national total of eggs and 11.4 of the total poultry meat are produced, 34 million 167 thousand doses of vaccine have been authorized and in Yucatan, 4.4 million.
The rest of the biologicals began to be applied in Coahuila, Sonora, Durango, Nayarit and Nuevo León, 41 million 351 thousand doses of vaccines from three laboratories, based on the availability of the biologicals and the determination of estimated risk.
As of November 2022, 6,719 HPAI A/H5N1 outbreaks have been reported in 61 countries. In Europe there are 37 million slaughtered birds, in America 54, in Asia 10 and in Africa 8.8 million.
In recent weeks, the veterinary services of Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Venezuela have reported the presence of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) A/H5N1.
The vaccination strategy in Mexico began 10 days ago in commercial production units, in areas of high animal health risk and in farms that raise parent and reproductive hens, because they are essential to preserve the production of chicken meat and eggs. for the national supply.
The Agriculture agency stressed that the minimum biosecurity measures in the poultry production units (UPA) continue to be strengthened and to date 2,491 farms have been certified by Senasica and 109 more are in process.
Likewise, the Agriculture officials explained that Senasica has accredited 453 authorized responsible veterinarians (MVRA) specialists in birds, most of them in Jalisco, with 73, Puebla, 39, Veracruz, 37, and Querétaro, 34.
So far in Mexico, Senasica reminded the attendees that the internal quarantine in the state of Nuevo León was lifted, a measure that prevails in Jalisco, Sonora and Yucatán, for which it invited the members of the production chain not to move products poultry that have not been certified by the technicians of the institution, after demonstrating the absence of influenza in their farms.
H5N1 avian influenza viruses first appeared in southern China in 1996. These viruses caused large-scale outbreaks in poultry in Hong Kong in 1997, resulting in 18 human infections.
The 1997 bird outbreak was controlled, but H5N1 avian influenza viruses were not eradicated in the avians.
