Cholera epidemic causes alert in Mexico

The Mexican government confirmed a cholera outbreak in the state of Hidalgo. So far there have been 77 cases, 9 of which are admitted to hospitals in the region. The state laboratory network, analyed over 17 500 samples of patients with diarrheal infections across the country, to prevent an epidemic.

The Mexican authorities reported the first death from the disease. While neighboring countries are alert in the nation are pursuing strategies to halt the increase in cases.

The Mexican government reported that about 79 cases of cholera were detected on Friday in central Mexico, where at least one person died. The disease did not appear for a decade in the country and has raised alerts, local media reported.

The federal secretary of Health, Juan Mercedes said HispanTV reviewed by the agency that "a person lost his life last September because of the outbreak of this strain, in the state of Hidalgo (center), where there were about 77 cases of total infected. "

Health Undersecretary Hidalgo, Ana Maria Tavares, said those 77 cases add two more confirmed in the neighboring state of Mexico, with a total of 79.

Although Tavares says that it is "isolated cases", acknowledged that "it is the same strain circulating in Caribbean countries like Haiti, Cuba and Dominican Republic."

Meanwhile, John said that the cholera outbreak is "controlled" while health officials have collected samples from residents of 14 000 houses, in addition to cleaning and chlorinating systems public drinking water supply.

In Mexico, from 9 September to 10 October 2013, the Mexico International Health Regulations (IHR) National Focal Point (NFP) reported 159 confirmed cases, including one death, of infection with Vibrio cholerae O:1 Ogawa toxigenic.

Of the confirmed cases, 2 (1.3%) are residents of the Federal District, 145 (91.2%) are from the state of Hidalgo, 9 (5.7%) are from the state of Mexico, 1 (0.6%) is from the state of San Luis Potosi and 2 (1.3%) are from the state of Veracruz. In total, 84 (53%) are female and 75 (47%) are male with ages ranging from 3 months old to 88 years old. Forty-three (27%) of the cases were hospitalized.

Investigation results are indicating that the river water is the source of contamination in the state of Hidalgo.

1 Among the confirmed cholera cases are 12 persons who had travelled to Cuba from other countries.

The health authorities of Mexico continue to: strengthen epidemiological activities at the national level; ensure the availability of inputs and quality of care in medical units; implement actions to ensure access to drinking water and basic sanitation at the community level; and monitor and check the chlorine levels. Health professionals at different levels of the health care system are being trained in cholera prevention, treatment and control. Public awareness campaigns on water and food safety are being carried out in Spanish and indigenous languages (Nahuatl and Otomi).

This is the first local transmission of cholera recorded since the 1991-2001 cholera epidemic in Mexico. The genetic profile of the strain isolated from patients in Mexico presents high similarity (>95%) with the strain that is currently circulating in three Caribbean countries (Haiti, Dominican Republic and Cuba), and is different from the strain that had been circulating in Mexico during more than a decade ago.

European Commission
ECHO Flash Update October 18th
...
Mexico - Cholera outbreak (ECHO)
The cholera outbreak is slowly expanding: official information indicates 159 cases in six states so far. Officially only one death has been reported but unofficial sources mention 6 other deaths. Local capacity seems sufficient to meet current needs, but the increase in the number of cases and their spread over a larger number of states is a cause for concern, especially after Hurricanes Ingrid and Manuel which debilitated water and sanitation infrastructures and conditions.
Several lethal cholera outbreaks over the last 150 years in Mexico claimed 20 000 lives in 1883, several thousands in 1948-50 and more recently in 1991, 45 000 cases and 522 deaths.
A possible spread to the Central American countries could lead to a tragedy, considering local capacities in Honduras and Guatemala: deep poverty, lack of resources and failing capacities in the health system, and uneven access to adequate water and sanitation in overcrowded areas. Guatemala and Nicaragua are in alert to prepare to address this risk.

Cholera in Mexico - 19 October 2013

The Ministry of Health in Mexico has reported 171 confirmed cases, including one death, of infection with Vibrio cholerae O1 Ogawa toxigenic between 9 September to 18 October 2013.

In the second week of September 2013, Mexico was affected simultaneously by a hurricane and tropical storm which caused heavy rains, floods, landslides and internal displacement of populations, thus increasing the risk of diarrhoeal diseases.

Of the 171 confirmed cases, two are from the Federal District, 157 cases from the state of Hidalgo, nine from the state of Mexico, one from the state of San Luis Potosi and two from the state of Veracruz.

Eighty-six of the total confirmed cases are women and 85 are men with ages ranging from three months to 88 years old. Of these, thirty-nine cases were hospitalised.

The health authorities of Mexico continue to strengthen the outbreak investigation and surveillance at the national level and ensure the availability and quality care in medical units. Health professionals at different levels of the health care system are being trained about prevention, treatment and control of the disease.

Measures are implemented to ensure access to drinking water and basic sanitation at the community level. Awareness campaigns, particularly around safe water and food consumption is being carried out in Spanish and indigenous languages.

This is the first local transmission of cholera recorded since the 1991-2001 cholera epidemic in Mexico.

The genetic profile of the bacterium obtained from patients in Mexico presents high similarity (95 percent) with the strain that is currently circulating in three Caribbean countries (Haiti, Dominican Republic and Cuba), and is different from the strain that had been circulating in Mexico during 1991-2001 epidemic.

WHO does not recommend that any travel or trade restrictions be applied to Mexico with respect to this event.
