Meningitis kills 49 in Niger

Meningitis has already claimed 49 lives since the beginning of this year in Niger, where 525 cases of the disease have been recorded, the Ministry of Public Health said.
It said in 2009, 2,926 cases of the disease were recorded, out of which 147 people died.
It said in addition to meningitis, 187 cases of measles have been recorded, out of which one death was recorded, in 2010. The figures compare with 2,123 cases with 13 deaths recorded in 2009.
Concerning swine flu, Niger has recorded 22 cases since 16 Feb., with all infected persons treated and cured.
The Ministry said malnutrition caused the death of 55 people out of the 45,525 cases recorded in 2010, as against 107 deaths from 27,890 cases recorded in 2009.
