Meningitis, dengue widespread in Vietnam last year: government
http://www.thanhniennews.com/healthy/?catid=8&newsid=25175

Last year was a bad one for Vietnam in terms of the number and severity of epidemics, the head of the Central Department of Health Prevention said Thursday.
Huy Nga blamed the widespread and frequent occurrence of diseases on a shortage of drugs and limited research to develop vaccines.

Poor awareness of disease prevention among people was also a reason, he said.
Meningitis, or brain inflammation, broke out in 52 of the nation?s 64 provinces.

Infections more than doubled compared to 2003, and fatalities increased by 40 percent.

Dengue struck in many areas around the country.

There were over 4,800 dengue cases last year and two deaths, and an increase of nearly 20% in incidence, according to the Ministry of Health.

Around 400 patients were hospitalized with dengue in southern provinces and cities.

HCM City, Soc Trang, Dong Thap, Da Nang, and Can Tho were the worst hit.
