Meningitis at OU now 'outbreak'

The seven bacterial meningitis cases at Ohio University the past two years have been declared an outbreak by the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Recent CDC testing indicates that all the cases were caused by the same strain of meningitis, strain B, said Ryan Lombardi, dean of students. That's why the CDC changed its classification of the cases from a cluster to an outbreak, Lombardi said last night....

The Ohio Department of Health has found one more case of bacterial meningitis that is a genetic match to the seven cases in the past year at Ohio University.
The department tested 12 other meningitis cases from around the state that were caused by group B bacteria to see if they were genetically similar to the cases in Athens, which all carry the same genetic fingerprint...

ATHENS, OH (WDTN) - A meningitis outbreak at Ohio University has expanded as state health confirms an 8th case on the Athens campus. The Center for Disease Control connects all the cases because the bacteria causing them has the same genes. Scientists are now trying to find the source of what they're calling an outbreak.
They've opened a website to help answer questions. You can find it at cdc.gov/meningitis .
