Bonnie Leung, a medical student at Auckland University in New Zealand, is urging people to get vaccinated against swine flu after her own near-death experience with the disease, reports the New Zealand Herald.

Leung, 22, caught the disease during the swine flu pandemic of 2009. Although she initially believed that she simply had a cold, she eventually developed a fever, chills and aches so severe that she was unable to leave her bed.

Once her mother took her to the hospital, doctors discovered that Leung had pneumonia in both of her lungs. Barely able to breathe on her own, she was put in an induced coma for two weeks and had to rely on a ventilator.
