9-28-09 NUMBER OF STUDENTS WITH FLU SYMPTOMS NEARLY DOUBLES LAST WEEK FROM WEEK BEFORE

The number of students with flu symptoms in the Medford School District has nearly doubled since last week, and one student in the Central Point School District has been hospitalized for the flu. On Wednesday, about 500 students, or about 4 percent of the Medford district's overall student body, were out sick with flu symptoms compared to 275 last week, the report stated. It's unclear whether any of the cases are part of the H1N1 virus that federal, state and local officials have been monitoring closely. None of the Medford district cases are known to have required hospitalization, said Tanya Tong, Medford district student services supervisor.
Nationwide, visits to doctors for influenza-like symptoms are higher than expected for this time of year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The first round of a vaccine for the virus is scheduled to be distributed later this month.

KTVL Staff Report

MEDFORD, Ore. -- Jackson County health officials tell News10 that a breakout of the H1N1 virus in Prospect will force the Prospect School to close until at least Monday.

They say several teachers and students have been infected with the virus, and they have no other choice at this time.

The district has just one school that covers K-12 classes. About 181 students are in the district.
