16:13 Friday was confirmed two new cases of Mexican influenza in Belgium. The two twintigers (twenty year old) are bevriend (friends) with the Mechelaar who tested yesterday positively on the Mexican influenza virus.

Wednesday it was confirmed that a 28 year old Gentenaar(a men from the city Gent in Belgium) was contaminated as the first belgian with the Mexican influenza virus. A day later the virus was determined at a 28 year old man from Mechelen. Both were transmitted to the Pietershospital in Brussels.

Sixteen tests
The health authorities contacted sixteen people who had had narrow contact with the Mechelaar since its return from New York on 11 May. Thursday evening got all these persons the visit of a health inspector, who them provided resources for a treatment of seven days to a packing with antivirale and informed them concerning succeeding their medical condition. None of them showed symptoms or felt at that moment not well.

Two of them, a 24 and a 26 year old became in the course of the night unwell and submitted on friday morning on the emergency department of a hospital. In consultation between the health inspector both persons were immediately tested and in the hospital were isolated awaiting the results.

Two times positive
Around 15.30 both returned tests with a positive result of the laboratory in the scientific institute public health. On this the two patients were transmitted to the Pieters hospital in Brussels.

The patients are friends with the young person who had yesterday been taken and with who they multiple contacts had had since its return from New York. At the moment of the flight New York-Brussel, the young person of 28 years showed not yed symptoms and was he not contagious.

In total twelve analyses were carried out today. Two tested positively, one were positive for the winter influenza and the nine other produced a negative result.

Gentenaar
The 28 year old Gentenaar was identified Wednesday as the first belgian with Mexican influenza. The employee of the Universiteit Gent flew on 27 April to the US. After a stay of 10 days in New York, he continued travelling to Chicago. The man arrived on 11 May in Belgium.

He was transmitted to the Pieters hospital in Brussels. There he will be placed for some days in quarantine. According to its doctors it goes well with the Gentenaar.

It is just as terrible as the ordinary winter influenza and he will heal without doubt within a couple of days, influenza commissioner emphasises Marc Van Ranst.

Mechelaar
During its travel the young Mechelaar stayed 5 days in the region of los Angeles and thereafter 5 days in the city New York. In the night of 12 on 13 May he became unwell (vomit). During the day of 13 May he developed coughs, myalgia (muscle ache) and a light fever (less than 38?C).

Thursday morning at 1.00 am. the young man admitted on the emergency department of an adjoining hospital, where the doctor and the health inspector decided to let carry out a precautionally test, as the procedure prescribes it.

Isolated
To avoid contagion of others, the man was replaced in isolation at home. When the test result became claer, the transferring of the patient was organised to the Pieters hospital. Its situation is not worrying..

From the information which the health authorities collected so far, becomes clear that the patient had contact with about fifteen persons who will be contacted. They get the recommendation to keep their medical condition in the eye and get if necessary a cure of seven days with antivirale medication.

Vaccine
The Mexican influenza (A/H1N1) is a new human virus with a mixed genetic origin. It is partly originating from pig influenza viruses, partly originating from bird influenza viruses and partly of human influenza viruses. On 18 March it was for the first time discovered in Mexico.

Minister of public health Laurette Onkelinx (PS) lets know that our country 152 millions euro invest in the development of a vaccine against the Mexican influenza virus. Still this year draws the federal government 90 million euro.
