Source: The Sangai Express

Imphal, June 11 2009: The influx of refugees from North Cachar Hill Districts to Tousem sub-division following the large scale violence perpetrated against the Zeme tribe in the neighbouring State of Assam has begun to take a toll of a different kind, as report of outbreak of Measles has been confirmed from the sub-division.

The Chief Medical Officer of Tamenglong in his report to the State Health Department submitted today confirmed that there has been an outbreak of Measles in the sub-division, affecting primarily young children.

The report submitted to the State Health Department said that the source of the Measles outbreak has been traced to the children from North Cachar Hills District and it has started slowly spreading to the local populace as well.

The woes of the people have been compounded further as the doctor posted at the Primary Health Centre at the sub-division is presently not in station.

At present there are about 815 refugees at Tamenglong district from North Cachar Hills District.

They started arriving at Tamenglong district from the early part of April.

With the CMO confirming the report, the State Health Department is ready to send a team of medical experts to assess the situation there, said a source while speaking to The Sangai Express today.

A source from the district administration of Tamenglong said that the Measles were first spread from the refugees and has started affecting the local people.

The outbreak however is not widespread, said the source.

A team of doctors has been deputed to the sub-division from the district headquarters to contain the situation.

The State Government has taken up relief work for the refugees and they will be provided labour under the NREGS.
