Seven York County students have viral meningitis
Maine's state epidemiologist says such cases typically arise when school begins.

Seven students in three York County school departments have contracted viral meningitis over the past week, the schools have reported, but a handful of students getting sick does not signal an impending outbreak, a top state health official said.

The Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention and the federal CDC don?t track viral meningitis cases, so it?s difficult to determine whether this fall is better or worse than previous years. Hospitals and other health care providers do report bacterial meningitis ? which is more rare and dangerous than viral meningitis ? to the state and federal health agencies. There have been no reported bacterial meningitis cases in Maine this year and there were two cases in 2014...

SANFORD ? School officials here were watching for it when viral meningitis popped up in a couple of nearby school districts and now it has hit schools in Sanford.

Superintendent David Theoharides, in a letter to parents dated Tuesday, said one Sanford Junior High School student and two Sanford High School students have been diagnosed with the disease...

...Viral meningitis first hit some York County schools two weeks ago, popping up in MSAD 60, which educates children from Berwick, North Berwick and Lebanon. RSU 57 ? the Massabesic school system that includes students from Alfred, Limerick, Lyman, Newfield, Shapleigh and Waterboro - was next, with a handful of cases. Later, a Saco Middle School student came down with the disease, which is said to usually run its course in 7-10 days...
