PORTLAND ? An infant recently arrived at Maine Medical Center in Portland coughing and vomiting uncontrollably. The diagnosis was whooping cough, a highly contagious respiratory disease that?s breaking out in pockets across Maine.

Most of the 80 cases reported in a surge of whooping cough, or pertussis, in the state this year have struck middle school-aged children. In four cases, children under 6 months old were sickened...

SKOWHEGAN -- A spike in cases of the highly contagious disease whooping cough in Somerset County has health officials concerned about the upcoming summer camp season and organizing public vaccination clinics.

Dr. Stephen Sears, the state epidemiologist, said there were 41 reported cases of the disease in Somerset County, up from 33 the previous week...

Cases of whooping cough on upswing statewide
The disease is now being reported among men and women over 40, according to Dr. Sheila Pinette, director of the Maine CDC.

SKOWHEGAN ? The number of cases of the highly contagious disease whooping cough continues to rise statewide -- as do the ages of those affected...

...There have been 347 confirmed cases of whooping cough in Maine since January, up from 265 cases reported as of July 19, Pinette said. There were just 79 cases of the disease in Maine at this time last year, she said.

Of confirmed cases statewide, 17 people were in their 40s, four were in their 50s and five were 60 and older...

There have been a total of 633* confirmed and probable pertussis cases reported statewide through Nov 21, 2012 (MMWR week 47), compared to 189 reported cases in 2011 during the same period. *Additional cases may have occurred especially in the most recent weeks that are not included in this report.
