In the videos at the ABC link, the reporter clearly says that the police say that the birds 'attacked" the van and there is no explanation for why they behaved so "aggressively".

This is believed to be the same species, Starlings, involved in the unexplained mass deaths in Utah where a dog got very ill after holding one of the birds in his mouth.
