Md. School To Close Over Swine Flu Cases

POSTED: 3:24 pm EDT October 6, 2009

LAUREL, Md. -- St. Vincent Pallotti High School in Laurel has informed its students that it will be closed on Wednesday due to some confirmed cases of the H1N1 virus.

The closure includes all practices, games and evening activities.

On the school's Web site, Principal Stephen Edmonds said that the school has five confirmed cases of the H1N1 virus and that about 100 students were out of class on Tuesday for various reasons.

Edmonds said some of those 100 students have the seasonal flu and potentially the H1N1 virus, but since some doctors aren't testing for it, they won't know for sure.

He said the reported swine flu cases have not been any worse than the seasonal flu so far but that many students stayed home as a precaution.

The principal said the school will be professionally cleaned as a precaution on Wednesday and will be ready to reopen on Thursday.

Edmonds urged all students and parents to follow the guidelines that their nurse gave out if their child isn't feeling well.

Swine Flu Closes Catholic High School in Maryland
100 students absent from high school Tuesday

LAUREL, Md. -- A Catholic high school in Laurel will be closed Wednesday because of the swine flu.

Five students at St. Vincent Palotti High School have confirmed cases of the H1N1 virus, but about 100 students missed class Tuesday for a variety of reasons, including regular seasonal flu and possible swine flu, according to Principal Stephen Edmonds.

Some doctors aren't bothering to distinguish between swine flu and seasonal flu, Edmonds said. They're prescribing Tamiflu, three-to-four days of bed rest and avoiding school for five days.

None of the confirmed cases of swine flu has been worse than regular flu, Edmonds said.

Wednesday will be a disinfectant day with cleaning crews scrubbing the school.

The closure includes all practices, games and activities.

The school plans to reopen Thursday.

St. Vincent Pallotti High School Principal Stephen Edmonds says he's trying to be proactive and prevent the spread of flu. He said he was trying to get a little bit ahead of the flu and help prevent its spread.

Edmonds says a cleaning company will disinfect all common surfaces.

Letter to Parents at Pallotti High School Parents:
Parents,

We will be closing school tomorrow, Wednesday, October 7, 2009 which will include all practices, games and evening activities. We have confirmed that we have 5 cases of the H1N1 Flu in the student population. We have approximately 100 students out today for a variety of reasons. Some students have the regular flu and maybe H1N1. Some doctors are not testing for it and are telling them it does not matter ? here's Tamirflu, stay in bed 3 to 4 days and come back to school after 5 days. The cases so far have been no worse than the regular flu. Some students are staying home as a precaution.

The bottom line is we are going to close tomorrow and have the cleaning company come to and disinfect all common surfaces which will give us a fresh clean start on Thursday, October 8th. This is both precautionary and a sanitizing manner.

PLEASE FOLLOW ALL GUIDELINES THAT NURSE SAUNDERS HAS SENT VIA EDLINE WHEN YOUR CHILD IS NOT FEELING WELL.

Sincerely,
