Maryland health officials confirmed another swine flu death Friday, bringing the state's tally to 13 deaths associated with the H1N1 virus. Because of privacy concerns, officials would not give details other than that the person who died was an adult from the Baltimore area with an underlying medical problem.
To date, 321 hospitalizations have been confirmed in Maryland. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention does not have an exact count of hospitalizations and deaths nationwide, but in a report released this week estimated as many as 5.7 million people around the country may have been sicked by the virus in the first few months of the outbreak this spring. Federal officials said Friday that the new flu is widespread now in all but two states and that child deaths rose to 114, up from 95 reported last week.
