McLean County health officials are investigating after about 15 students may have been infected with a contagious virus leading to lung problems.

Two weeks ago, the school nurse at Heyworth Junior-Senior High School discovered a cluster of students were getting pretty sick.

It was later confirmed that some of them had pleurisy, which is a swelling of the lining of the lungs.

"All of the students that were infected are healthy again. It was fairly short-lived.
My understanding of pleurisy is that pleurisy is a viral infection and it runs its course and all of our students that were infected are back to school, healthy, etc.,? said Heyworth Community Unit School District 4 Superintendent Randy Merker.

The health department is planning to take blood samples this week from students to find out what may have caused the pleurisy.

Re: McLean Co. IL: pleurisy outbreak

In the past, a disease called ''trench fever'' caused pleural inflammation after pneumonia. A Rickettsia-like organism was the cause. The transmission is by lice biting.
