A number of students at the University of Manitoba's Fort Garry campus have become ill with mumps. The school issued a warning to students from the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority on Wednesday.

Mumps spreads through direct contact with saliva of an infected person. It can jump from person to person through the sharing of drinks, including water bottles, kissing, sneezing, and coughing, the WRHA said.

After exposure, it can take 25 days before a person develops symptoms...

Manitoba health officials are urging University of Manitoba students to take care after a number of students have been diagnosed with mumps.

The province?s chief provincial public health officer reported last week that nine cases have been reported in the province since Sept. 1. The majority of the cases are students of the Fort Garry campus and most patients were not hospitalized.

The province reported the number is nearly double the typical four or five cases seen in Manitoba a year.

University spokesperson John Danakas told media last week at least four cases were confirmed and the students have been isolated. Two were confirmed to be Bison football players.

Danakas said this week the situation at the U of M is stabilizing but cautioned anybody with suspected symptoms to visit a physician, which he said is especially important given the virus?s long incubation period...

The provincial government is warning about an outbreak of mumps that seems to be largely relegated to post-secondary students.

Between Sept. 1 and Dec. 8, there were 61 cases of mumps reported in Manitoba, up from the usual four to five cases per year.

The province said in a news release that the majority of cases reported were among people ages 17 to 29, who are students with ties to the University of Manitoba, the University of Winnipeg and the Universit? de St. Boniface...

New provincial numbers on confirmed mumps cases in Manitoba show a continued spike in the disease, with many cases connected to Winnipeg area universities.

Health officials said there have been 79 confirmed cases in Manitoba between September and December of 2016. Manitoba typically has four to five cases each year.

However, the majority of this year?s cases are people between 17 years old and 29 years old and are connected to The University of Manitoba, the University of Winnipeg and Universit? de St. Boniface.

The province said many affected are students who participated in sports...

Winter illnesses are once again making the rounds. On top of an outbreak of whooping cough in southern Manitoba and a spike in ER visits ahead of flu season, the province is contending with an ongoing outbreak of the mumps.

Earlier this week, Grant Park High School sent a note to parents warning of a few recent cases of mumps at the school.

A similar warning was issued last October at the University of Manitoba.

According to Manitoba Public Health, the province typically sees around four or five cases of mumps a year. But between Sept. 1 of last year and Jan. 5 of this year there were 87 confirmed cases, the province says...

A mumps outbreak that has seen 125 cases of the respiratory illness in Manitoba since the beginning of September has finally reached the Northern Regional Health Authority (NRHA) with two cases of mumps having been confirmed in Thompson on Jan. 25.

?It was late Wednesday that we got word and then yesterday got word of a few more that now we?re just waiting for those test results to come back,? said NRHA medical officer of health Dr. Michael Isaac in a Jan. 27 interview. ? We haven?t had any other cases over in The Pas and Flin Flon yet so we?re focusing on Thompson for now but we?re doing messaging with providers and health care workers across the whole of the north to make sure that everyone?s aware. We actually were the last health region to have a confirmed case.?

The number of cases this year is high, says Isaac, with most of them occurring among people under the age of 30, with a particular concentration among university students aged 17 to 29 in Winnipeg...

The number of mumps cases in Manitoba has more than doubled since the outbreak started in late 2016, and the outbreak is gaining speed rather than slowing down.

Between December 2016 and February 2017, 78 cases of mumps were reported in Manitoba. That brings the total number of cases since the outbreak began to 139.

The number of mumps cases continue to steadily climb in Manitoba, but experts say there?s not much that can be done about it.

There have been around 80 new cases reported between December 2016 and February to date, bringing this outbreak?s total to 176 confirmed cases.

There had been 11 confirmed cases of mumps in the Northern Regional Health Authority (NRHA) as of March 29, including six in Thompson, as the total number of cases in Manitoba between Sept. 1 of last year and March 23 reached 238, up from about 125 in late January when mumps was first confirmed in the north.

Most of the people contracting mumps initially were under 30 years old, with a particular concentration among people in Winnipeg aged 18 to 29, but Manitoba Health says cases are now being seen in all age groups and throughout the province.

NRHA medical officer of health Dr. Michael Isaac told the Thompson Citizen in January when the first northern cases were confirmed that the province normally sees around two to 10 cases per year...

Mumps continues to spread in Manitoba with almost 100 more cases in the last month.

As of April 7, there have been 290 confirmed cases of mumps since Sept. 1, 2016, the highest number in two decades.

A provincial medical officer of health said that number could go as high as 600 before the virus wanes.

"The pool here could even double that number before things settle out completely. We could potentially go to 600. To be honest I am always concerned, but I also know this is progressing as I kind of thought it would," said Dr. Richard Rusk...

Manitoba's mumps outbreak, now entering its eighth month, is still infecting people, but not as severely or for as long as before, according to the province.

As of April 28, 345 cases of the viral infection have been confirmed by Manitoba Health since September 1, 2016. An increase of 55 cases in the last three weeks has boosted that number.

"Unfortunately it's not gone yet," said Dr. Richard Rusk, a provincial medical officer of health. "We're still going to see increasing numbers for at least another month, if not longer."

Rusk said the number of new confirmed cases province-wide is going up at a slower rate, following a bump in new cases about a month ago. He has previously speculated the number of cases could surpass 600 in Manitoba. On Monday, Rusk declined to speculate further on where the numbers will end up.

In comparison, Saskatchewan has confirmed 34 mumps cases so far this year, while 65 have been confirmed in Alberta. North Dakota has seen just four confirmed cases in 2017, according to data from the state's health department. Another 23 are either suspected or probable mumps cases.

Manitoba typically sees between four and eight cases per year.

While the outbreak started in university students and sports teams, Rusk said it has moved on from those two groups...

Hundreds of mumps cases have been reported and confirmed in Manitoba, more than 100 times the yearly average for the province.

Health officials say the rise in cases was first noted last October, but have continued to take a toll on patients around the province.

There have been 614 cases reported from Jan. 1 to June 30 of this year. To put that in perspective, Manitoba normally sees approximately five cases of mumps each year...

Measures to prevent the spread of mumps among evacuees from three Manitoba First Nations evacuated because of wildfires are being put in place after a handful of people came forward with symptoms resembling the illness.

A medical officer of health with the province said lab testing confirmed one case of mumps in an evacuee staying in Brandon, with more possible cases reported among evacuees in Brandon and Winnipeg.

Roughly 4,200 people from the Island Lake communities of Wasagamack, Garden Hill and St. Theresa Point First Nations were forced from their homes last week by an encroaching wildfire. Nearly 2,000 people were initially sheltered in emergency centres in Winnipeg, although that number had dropped to roughly 375 by Wednesday, according to the Red Cross...

An outbreak of mumps at the Brandon Correctional Centre has staff worried as the number of cases more than tripled in the past few weeks.

A correctional centre staff member, who asked to remain anonymous for fear of losing their job, said the number of confirmed cases had gone to nine from two in a two-week period, with three more cases waiting to be confirmed as of Thursday.

One of those confirmed cases is a staff member.

"It may be small numbers, but it?s still not small potatoes to us," the staff member said. "Staff at the centre are biting their nails? we want to exhale, but we can?t."...

Flin Flon has fared comparatively well during a mumps outbreak in northern Manitoba.

A total of 98 cases of the highly contagious viral disease were reported across the Northern Health Region (NHR) in June, with another 94 in July.

?In a typical year, we?d see zero, maybe three, four, five cases. This is extremely high for us in the North,? said NHR medical health officer Dr. Michael Isaac.

While numbers have yet to be finalized for August, more than 60 cases had already been reported as of mid last week.
