Health: a dozen cases of legionellosis have been detected in Mauritius

Feb 17, 2023 7:07 P.M.

A dozen cases of legionellosis have been detected in Mauritius. Announcement made by Health Minister Kailesh Jagutpal this afternoon, Friday 17 February.

These cases were detected in Reunionese and French tourists on vacation in Mauritius.

The Minister explains that the incubation period is 10 days. “The source of infection is stagnant water. Symptoms occur two to ten days after contamination and resemble the flu with fever and difficulty breathing. Healing occurs spontaneously within a few days ,” he says. "The route of transmission is not from human to human."

Also present, Minister Steve Obeegadoo said for his part that a surveillance program had been put in place by the authorities.

“Tests were carried out in the hotels and the results were positive in the Outtrigger hotel in Bel Ombre”, he adds, before continuing, “nou pe travay pou asir sekirite bann dimoun dan bann lotel ek nou pena okenn rezon pou panse ki legionelose li presan an deor sa lotel-la”.

The latter maintains that the Mauritian authorities have appealed for international assistance, “in order to be guided”.

Mauritius: Cases of legionellosis reported on Reunionese

On-site tests were positive at the Outrigger Beach Resort, in Bel-Ombre, in the South-West.

The ARS of La Réunion alerted the Mauritian health authorities last week that less than a dozen cases of legionellosis have been detected in inhabitants of the island and French people returning from vacation in various hotels in Mauritius.

Their stay dates back as far as early last year. The confirmation came from the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control to which the Reunion Island ARS sent samples.

The announcement was made by Deputy Prime Minister and Tourism Minister Steven Obeegadoo on Friday afternoon. He indicated that measures have been taken in these establishments for decontamination. Water in storage tanks is maintained at 60°C while bottled water has been dispensed to customers.

Tests carried out in the hotels mentioned by the ARS of Reunion were positive within the Outrigger Beach Resort, in Bel-Ombre, i.e. in three water points.

The Ministry of Health has called on international experts to eliminate any risk of contamination with Legionnaires' disease. “ We are satisfied with the protocol put in place ,” said the minister in charge, Kailesh Jagutpal.

He also points out that this disease is relatively common in hotels around the world. A follow-up will be carried out to prevent any future contamination. Foreign expertise will also be called upon for tests on drinking water. " To date, there is no reason to think that Legionellosis is active outside the hotel that tested positive ," reassures Steven Obeegadoo.

“ We had about ten cases out of nearly a million tourists. Our duty was to inform the public. The Ministry of Health will develop a protocol to support hotels. Random tests will be carried out , ”announces the Deputy Prime Minister. " Disinfection must be done and it will be necessary to avoid any accumulation of water to eliminate any risk ", adds the Minister of Health.

Presence of legionellosis in Mauritius: the authorities reassure

Joint and express press conference of the Ministries of Tourism and Health yesterday. The subject discussed is the presence of the bacterium responsible for legionellosis at the Outrigger hotel . But Steven Obeegadoo and Kailesh Jagutpal reassure: only one hotel is concerned and only a dozen cases have been identified among tourists since the end of December.

In front of the press yesterday Friday February 17, the Minister of Health spoke from the outset on the contamination and the symptoms of legionellosis. “Contamination does not happen from human to human. You have to be in contact with the source of contamination to be infected ,” said Dr Kailesh Jagutpal. The incubation period is two to 10 days, and in most cases the form is mild and manifests as a mild fever that does not require treatment . “Some people with comorbidities may have more severe symptoms, such as cough, higher fever or lung problems. Treatment is with antibiotics.Subsequently, the Minister returned to the source of contamination: the bacterium proliferates in stagnant water at a temperature of 25°C to 45°C. “It can come from faucets, pipes, swimming pools or saunas.” Contamination occurs through the respiratory tract.

Protocol

The local authorities were informed of the presence of legionellosis in Mauritius by the Reunionese authorities after the discovery of cases of patients who had stayed in Mauritius. The Ministry of Health then informed the hotels concerned. Water samples were collected from several establishments, but only one gave positive results. The protocol in place is thermal shock disinfection.

Thus, the temperature of reservoirs and other water conservation points has been increased. The amount of chlorine in the water has also been increased. Showers, taps, saunas and kitchens, among others, have been disinfected. “After all this, there is very little risk of seeing the bacteria again. You should know that 14% of cases of legionellosis are detected in hotels around the world. This is not a unique case in Mauritius ,” said the Minister of Health.

Steven Obeegadoo, for his part, confirmed that there are no cases detected outside hotels and that the establishment concerned receives all the necessary support. “We are not talking about the Covid. This disease is not transmitted from human to human or contact ,” he reiterated. Moreover, the Minister of Tourism affirmed that there is a permanent communication between Mauritius and Reunion. The two departments are working closely together to develop a sampling protocol and constant monitoring. "At this time, we have no reason to believe that Legionnaires' disease is present outside the hotel concerned."
