Mauritius records 208 cases of dengue fever

Mauritian Health Minister Rajesh Jeetah told Parliament on Tuesday that 208 cases of dengue fever had been confirmed in the Island since the first case was recorded 3 June.
Jeetah said blood samples were taken from persons showing symptoms of dengue fever for analysis at the Central Health Laboratory.
Some of the initial samples were also sent to South Africa and Singapore for validation.
"However, the number of suspected and confirmed cases of dengue fever has decreased since 19 June, 2009," he disclosed.
Jeetah said attempts were on to identify areas in the regions where dengue fever cases had been reported.
He also said that the ongoing use of pesticides (larvidice) throughout the country to control the flu had been reinforced.
Entomological surveys have been reinforced in the localities where cases have be en detected; a National Cleaning Campaign has been launched; action has been taken to include dengue fever in the list of notifiable diseases under the Public Health Act.
Also, all health personnel, including those in the private sector, have been directed to closely monitor the situation and report any suspected case.
According to the minister, a survey was being carried out on a daily basis in Port Louis and other localities where cases have been reported and persons with fever have been requested to attend the health service for blood sampling.
Jeetah emphasised that a national sensitisation campaign had been launched to educate the public on precautionary measures to prevent mosquito bites.
