Deaths of two women in Adrar, following an illness myst?rieuse

Soumis by journalist Tues, 02/11/2010 - 09:21

The correspondent of the MAI in the wilaya of Adrar reported, quoting several sources, the deaths of two women, which occurred two days ago, in the resort of Agjett, under the common Tawaz (45 km East of the town of Atar), following an illness, which remains unknown.

The caller also stated that two members of the family are still under medical supervision in hospital Atar, stating that their health has improved, according to the doctor.

The deaths of two women coincided with the death of camels in the same area. The veterinary services of the Wilaya could not, so far, determine the cause of these strange deaths.

Some citizens expressed concern that these deaths are due to consumption of contaminated meat.

Such a hypothesis has however been rejected by local authorities who have stated that this may be a malaria affecting individuals physically weak, noting that neighbors of the victims who ate the same meat, are healthy.

The authorities noted that women who have died, have passed away, a week after consuming the meat "suspicious".

According to a report by a veterinary mission that visited in recent days, the site concerned "no general symptom has occurred in animals" in this region.

The report concluded that it is impossible to confirm the existence of a disease, without the detection of specific symptoms and conducting tests on samples taken from animals exhibiting these signs.

These same services have also mentioned cases of deaths in the ranks of camels in other mughatas the wilaya, which they believe requires intensified surveillance measures against the contagious animal diseases.

The correspondent of the MAI in the Wilaya also reported that the Wali of Adrar, Saidou Sall, in a statement Monday in Atar, indicated "that the victims died after suffering from fever and muscle pain ".

Wali has also vigorously denied, News relayed by some sites claiming that the causes of deaths resulting from food poisoning resulting from consumption of meat from camels with a rapidly spreading epidemic in that region, stating that "talk the existence of such a pandemic in animals is baseless. "

Wali said that finally "about the deaths of 40 camels is totally false, because mission dispatched veterinarian, has discovered that the corpse of one camel," he has concluded.

Adrar Health: Unknown Fever of Amogjar continue to kill.

A 3rd victim died this morning. He is the brother of two sisters Emnatt Tihiya who died before yesterday with a particular fever.

After registration of new cases, arrived yesterday and this morning at the hospital in Atar it is DRASS turn, Regional Director of Health to go himself, presto,to the scene of the tragedy.

This deadly fever which is characterized by joint pain, vomiting and temperature rise, suddenly raged Sunday in a camp near Amogjar.

Despite the autopsy done at one of the girls died on the first day and consideration of other victims, the doctors are dumbfounded by this disease they can not be determined. Atar populations begin to worry.

Re: Mauritania - Unknown Fever of Amogjar continue to kill

Re: Mauritania - Unknown Fever of Amogjar continue to kill

So we appear to have three fatalities, two sisters and a brother, and at least one (and possibly three) additional cases. Symptoms mentioned so far are fever, joint and muscle pain, and vomitting, which is really too non-specific to suggest a specific etiology. The incubation period seems to be very short as well, as all the illnesses and deaths have occurred in the past four days.

CCHF is consistent with this description (and possible illness in camels), and has been reported from Mauritania before:

http://www.promedmail.org/pls/apex/...CHECK_DISPLAY,F2400_P1202_PUB_MAIL_ID:X,21181

Rift Valley fever is also consistent with both the illness in humans and aminals, and it too has been reported in Mauritania:

http://www.promedmail.org/pls/apex/...CHECK_DISPLAY,F2400_P1202_PUB_MAIL_ID:X,19970

There was also a report on an unidentified hemorrhagic illness in Nouakchott last year:

http://www.flutrackers.com/forum/showthread.php?t=125634

Anthrax and plague would also be good symptomatic matches, and do exist all over the world, but I cannot find a report of either illness from Mauritania.

Re: Mauritania - Unknown Fever of Amogjar continue to kill

Re: Mauritania - Unknown Fever of Amogjar continue to kill

This source suggests six total cases, all with roughly simultaneous onset, raising the possiblity of a poisoning as well.

Adrar: Fever unknown [kills] two girls

The inhabitants of the town of Amogjar, located 35 km north of Atar, was surprised last Saturday (October 30) by a fever that has hit several people at once. Vomiting, joint pain and death of two young girls 15-16years. The Regional Directorate of Health in Adrar dispatched the Chief Medical Officer of PMI Atar on the scene. Having consulted all present (a dozen tents), the doctor brought a serious case is currently hospitalized in the hospital in Atar and Nouakchott during evacuation. During the mission, three other people came after him to the hospital in Atar. The case of the latter do not appear serious, as the hospital director.

While parents speak ill of food poisoning due to consumption of camel meat for several days or insecticide sprayers left by the anti-locust, doctors can not seem to determine the disease. They did several blood tests and others, that they are being sent in specialized laboratories.

Deaths of 2 women in Adrar, following a mysterious illness
----------------------------------------------------------
The correspondent of the AMI [Mauritanian Information Agency], in the
wilaya [region] of Adrar, quoting several sources in agreement,
reported on the deaths of 2 women following an unknown illness, which
occurred 2 days ago [1 Nov 2010] in Agjett, a locality belonging to
the Tawaz commune (45 km [28 mi] to the east of Atar town).

The correspondent also indicated that 2 members of the same family
are still under medical supervision in hospital in Atar, stating that
their health has improved, according to the treating doctor.

The deaths of the 2 women coincided with the death of camels in the
same area. The veterinary services of the province could not, so far,
determine the cause of these strange deaths.

Some citizens expressed concern that these deaths are due to
consumption of contaminated meat.

Such a hypothesis however has been rejected by the local authorities
who have stated that this may be malaria affecting individuals who
are physically weak, noting that neighbors of the victims who ate the

The authorities also noted that the women died a week after consuming
the "suspicious" meat.

According to a report by a veterinary mission that visited the
affected site in recent days, "no general symptom has occurred in the
animals" in this region.

The report concluded that it is impossible to confirm the existence
of a disease, without the detection of specific symptoms and
conducting tests on samples taken from animals exhibiting these signs.

These same services have also mentioned cases of deaths in camels in

requires intensified surveillance measures against the contagious
animal diseases.

The correspondent of the AMI in the region also reported that the
Wali [governor] of Adrar, Mr Saidou Sall, in a statement made Monday
[1 Nov 2010] in Atar, indicated "that the victims died after
suffering from fever and muscle pain."

The governor has also vigorously denied the news relayed by some
sites claiming that the cause of the deaths was food poisoning
resulting from the consumption of meat from camels affected by a
rapidly spreading epidemic in that region, stating that "to speak of

The governor concluded by saying that, "to talk of the deaths of 40
camels is totally false, because the veterinary mission that was
dispatched to the area, has only found the corpse of only one camel."

[The 2 newswires above mention that the clinical presentation of
these cases has been one of high fever, arthralgia (joint pains), and
vomiting. Locally, there are numerous hypotheses being proposed for
the possible etiology of these deaths and illnesses, including
malaria, and an association with the consumption of camel meat, with
rumors that there may have been a camel die-off in the area where the
fatalities resided. As with many as yet undiagnosed outbreaks
associated with high fatalities, newswire reports often present
conflicting pieces of information reflecting a level of panic and
concern among the population and a health sector that is trying to
reassure the population. This appears to be the case where there are
rumors of a camel die-off, consumption of camel meat that is
suspected to be contaminated, and results of a field trip that
theoretically identified only one camel death in the area.

Just looking at the reported symptoms, high fever, arthralgia, and
vomiting, with an observed high case fatality rate, the differential
diagnosis would be a lengthy list of diseases including those of
viral, bacterial, and parasitic etiologies, and including diseases
that are known zoonotic as well as those not known to be zoonotic.

The rumors surrounding a possible concurrent camel die off in the
area combined with a history of consumption of camel meat increases
the temptation to put known zoonotic diseases higher on the
differential diagnosis (this presumes a probable contact with the raw
meat and blood of animals who may have been infected with viral
agents such as Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever and Rift Valley
fever). But it is possible that these cases are not related to
possible diseases in the camels in the area.

It should be noted that the Adrar region (province) of Mauritania is
in the Saharan desert (the majority of the country is located in
desert and semiarid regions), with migratory populations that live in
encampments near water sources. From the above given information, it
sounds as though this outbreak is occurring in one such encampment.
While rain is scarce in this region, sudden deluges do occur. Keeping
that in mind, another disease that comes to mind with the
presentation of arthralgias, vomiting, and fever is leptospirosis.

One can keep discussing the factors in favor of one or more of the
possible etiologic agents, but at this point it seems prudent to
await further information from knowledgeable sources in the region on
results of laboratory studies conducted on the hospitalized cases.

Re: Mauritania - Unknown Fever of Amogjar continue to kill

Re: Mauritania - Unknown Fever of Amogjar continue to kill

Whatever this is, it is almost certainly spread by the camels themselves, as we have reports of a couple more deaths with contact with camels. CCHF is quite likely.

Adrar. /Fièvre Amogjar : Le Wali sur les lieux du drame. / Amogjar Fever: The Wali on the scene.

The sudden death this morning of a camel herder and that yesterday's camel guide (Amkhawel) of Ehel Moustapha, whose body was burnt publicly by the veterinarian, has relaunched with a vengeance-it series "weird fever of Amogjar.

To appreciate the situation itself, to inquire for news of affected families following the death of some of their calm and somewhat heated minds, the Wali of the Adrar visited this morning (Thursday, 4 November) in the disputed area.

The visit comes after the day before yesterday, the Medical Officer of PMI from Atar and yesterday, the Regional Director of Health (Drass), is accompanied by the Wali Hakim of Atar, regional leaders of the army, gendarmerie custody, the police, the representative of the CSA and the environment.

Recall that on his return last night, Drass brought with him to Amogjar two young children he immediately interned in the hospital from Atar.

Early this season when the resurgence of diseases that affect men and animals is normal, some are concerned that the scourge that killed several animals Inchiri Tagant Dhar Adrar (Ain Savr) and now the Baten (Atar- Amogjar) do dramatically more widespread.

Many families Ehel Mommeu, Ehel Aina Ehel Tihiya etc., deplore in fact, losses due to sudden death in their livestock.

This post suggests that this may be a false alarm - the three (or four?) deaths are blamed on malnutrition, and those ill are stated to have recovered. No indication of which pathogen is suspected to be the cause of the fever, nor what the suspected cause of the camel deaths is.

However, the Wali of himself see patients with fever in one of the families visited. It took an aggressive treatment to restore their normal state. Thus, Mr. Sall Saïdou Wali Adrar jeudi18 November 2010 made a visit to Aoujeft. The first of its kind since this is Moughataa prey to a mysterious illness that claimed the lives of nine of his son. The two goals moving forward this official delegation are:

1 - The launch of the crop,

2 - Information on the living conditions of local people.

To achieve its goals it is not matter of course to accept the disturbing presence of a witness as the forum of non-state actors in the Adrar in the delegation.

This is the first time, moreover, that the FANEA is absent if not voluntarily away from any movement since its inception. For the simple reason that he has denounced the inaction and indifference in relation to the suffering populations Aoujeft. He also asked that light be shed, located responsibilities through independent inquiry. To better understand the causes of this mysterious epidemic responsible for this large number of deaths and the delay in the responsiveness of local authorities.

Despite this unfortunate we welcome in the FANEA Wali's visit. Whatever late and out of step with the passage of this mysterious fever. Better late than never.

We deplore the absence of FANEA this public mission that gave it more meaning, efficiency in terms of popular support and performance. The reasons for this exclusion as it is to look into what made the creed of FANEA c is to say in its independence of action and freedom of advanced opinion in the Wilaya.

We reiterate our firm determination to continue playing the role that we have under the law of our country, civic duty, reason and the national consciousness.

We urge all the free forces within the government as a private in the Wilaya of Adrar to support our commitment to sustainable local development and constructive. Only way we hold in these hard times experienced by Mauritania to save the draft presidential reform despite those who want to nip in the bud.

Appreciate the openness and progress of the Secretary General of the Association of Mayors of Northern Ould Souleymane Ould Mohamed M. Mahaha expressed his article on local issues and challenges publiésdans columns Abberation SOS last week and covered extensively on the canvas.

Remember FANEA's desire to see the urgent establishment of an independent commission of inquiry to establish the appropriate light on the realities of the facts and mysteries surrounding the passage of this fever has Aoujeft.
