BOSTON -- The first person infected this year with Eastern Equine Encephalitis is said to be an elderly man from Raynham.

Don McKinnon of the Raynham Health Department confirmed that the man lives in Raynham but did not know his identity.

"There's a gentleman, age 80, who has EEE,? said McKinnon. ?I hear he's a Raynhamite. I don't know his name. I don't know if whether he contracted it while in Raynham or somewhere else."

The Massachusetts Department of Public Health said testing confirmed the infection on Friday. The patient became ill on Saturday and was hospitalized a few days later.

(FOX 25 / MyFoxBoston.com) - The state is standing by its decision to forgo aerial spraying after an elderly man dies of Eastern Equine Encephalitis also known as EEE.

80-year-old Martin Newfield of Raynham died Monday of the disease.
