In a video shared by Raptor Tales Rescue of Shrewsbury, the bird could be seen having “sudden and frequent head movements.” This was cause for concern for it having avian influenza, also known as bird flu.

The eagle was taken to the Wildlife Clinic and tested for the disease. It test positive and was euthanized.

Raptor Tales Rescue of Shrewsbury

February 11 at 10:07 AM

Townsend, MA - We assisted the finder of this adult bald eagle. The video shows neurological deficits with sudden and frequent head movements causing us serious concern for avian influenza. The eagle was taken to the Wildlife Clinic where it tested positive and was euthanized due to the disease. Infected carcasses (like waterfowl) are easy meals for eagles, vultures, other raptors, coyotes and fox. We are incredibly saddened by this loss of life and want to thank the finder for being so caring and proactive. Please see guidance regarding avian influenza below:

Avian flu confirmed in Boston-area birds, public health officials say

BOSTON — Highly pathogenic avian flu, or bird flu, has been confirmed in birds in Boston area parks
public health officials said Wednesday.

“Risk of human infection is currently low,” Boston Public Health Commission officials said in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Avian flu was confirmed in the Emerald Necklace, a park system in Boston and Brookline that is over seven miles long and covers 1,100 acres, officials said.

‘Keep their pets indoors’: Brookline town officials offer guidance on avian flu in local wildlife

February 27, 2026

BROOKLINE, Mass. — Local pet owners are being urged to keep their pets indoors after Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza H5N1 has been confirmed in wild birds along the Riverway and Olmsted Parks in Brookline and Boston.

Cats are highly susceptible to Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza and may die from infection, Brookline town officials said in a statement on Friday. Cat owners in affected areas are advised to keep their pets indoors to prevent exposure.

Dogs and other pets should remain leashed and kept away from wildlife.

Brookline employees are working with Boston Park Rangers “to maintain consistent safety and response protocols,” Brookline public health officials and the town’s public works department said in a statement.

“Park Rangers are patrolling affected areas daily, removing sick or deceased animals, and responding to reports from the public,” town officials said.
