Massachusetts led the nation in vaccinating its residents against both swine flu and seasonal flu during fall and winter, according to a state report to be released tomorrow.

Thirty-six percent of residents were inoculated against the swine strain, also known as H1N1, compared with 21 percent nationally. Seasonal flu vaccinations were administered to 57 percent of the state?s population, compared with 37 percent of the country.

?The mobilization in Massachusetts against H1N1 was a very successful one, as indicated by our immunization rates. We think that is a very significant finding and an indication that the approaches that we took were effective in reaching a large number of residents of the state in a short amount of time,?? John Auerbach, commissioner of the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, said in an interview.
