Wakefield - The Wakefield Health Department was notified that one of the 26 confirmed cases of H1N1 is that of a Wakefield resident.
Preliminary information shows that this person does not have any school-aged children. The updated information from the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, the H1N1 flu is acting similarly to seasonal influenza. Whether H1N1 or seasonal flu, each requires continued monitoring.

As the N1H1 flu is a virus that is spread from person to person the Wakefield Health Department recommends the following steps:
? Wash your hands frequently with soap and warm water or use an alcohol based hand sanitizer
? Cover your cough with a tissue or cough into your inner elbow and not your hands
? If you are sick, stay home from work and if your child is sick keep them home from school

The Massachusetts Department of Public Health confirmed 26 additional cases of H1N1 flu as of 11 a.m. May 7. This brings the total case count to 71. Each of the new cases is expected to fully recover and one of the newly confirmed cases was hospitalized but has been discharged.

Of the 26 new cases, 14 are located in Middlesex County and of those, two are under the age of 10, 11 are between the ages of 11 and 20 and one is more than 20 years old.

This increase in cases in Massachusetts, similar to what is being seen in other states, was expected given the intensity of surveillance for new cases, and the broad testing program for specimens early in the outbreak. DPH?s testing strategy, consistent with Centers for Disease Control (CDC) guidelines, will change over time to focus on more seriously ill patients.

The new cases also indicate that the virus, as with any influenza virus, spreads from person to person.
