During the week ending November 2, 2013, influenza-like illness (ILI) intensity in Maryland was MINIMAL and there was SPORADIC geographic spread of influenza.

Seven influenza-associated hospitalizations were reported.

Three specimens tested positive for influenza by PCR at the DHMH Laboratories Administration.

Two outbreaks of respiratory disease were reported. The number of ILI visits to sentinel providers was still low, compared to baseline.

During the week ending November 16, 2013, influenza-like illness (ILI) intensity in Maryland was MINIMAL and there was LOCAL geographic spread of influenza.

Five influenza-associated hospitalizations were reported.

Three specimens tested positive for influenza by PCR at the DHMH Laboratories Administration.

One outbreak of respiratory disease was reported.

The number of ILI visits to sentinel providers was low, compared to baseline.

Clinical Laboratory Influenza Testing
Thirty-five clinical laboratories reported performing 636 influenza diagnostic tests, mostly rapid influenza diagnostic tests (RIDT).
Of those, 18 (2.8%) were positive for influenza. Of those testing positive, 6 (33%) were influenza type A and 12 (67%) were influenza type B.

During the week ending November 30, 2013, influenza-like illness (ILI) intensity in Maryland was MINIMAL and there was LOCAL geographic spread of influenza.

Six influenza-associated hospitalizations were reported. One specimen tested positive for influenza by PCR at the DHMH Laboratories Administration. One outbreak of respiratory disease was reported. The number of ILI visits to sentinel providers was slightly elevated, but still low compared to baseline.

Sixteen sentinel providers reported a total of 6,507 visits last week. Of those, 83 (1.3%) were visits for ILI. This is below the Maryland baseline of 2.0%.

Emergency Departments in Maryland reported a total of 39,674 visits last week through the ESSENCE surveillance system. Of those, 475 (1.2%) were visits for ILI.

Thirteen sentinel providers reported a total of 8,368 visits this week. Of those, 114 (1.4%) were visits for ILI. This is below the Maryland baseline of 2.0%.

Visits to Emergency Departments for ILI
Emergency Departments in Maryland reported a total of 44,645 visits this week through the ESSENCE surveillance system. Of those, 584 (1.3%) were visits for ILI.

Clinical Laboratory Influenza Testing
Thirty-four clinical laboratories reported performing 1,096 influenza diagnostic tests, mostly rapid influenza diagnostic tests (RIDT). Of those, 88 (8.0%) were positive for influenza. Of those testing positive, 70 (79.5%) were influenza type A and 18 (20.5%) were influenza type B.

State Laboratories Administration Influenza Testing
The DHMH Laboratories Administration performed a total of 118 PCR tests for influenza. Twenty-five (21.2%) of the specimens tested positive. Of those, 21 (84.0%) were Type A (H1N1), two (8.0%) were type A (H3N2), and two (8.0%) were Type B.

Influenza-like illness (ILI) intensity: Minimal
Geographic spread: Local

? Eleven influenza-associated hospitalizations were reported.
? Forty specimens tested positive for influenza by PCR at the DHMH Laboratories Administration.
?Two outbreaks of respiratory disease were reported.
? Most ILI indicators decreased or held steady compared to the previous week, while the proportion of specimens testing positive at the state lab and sentinel labs increased.
? Overall, influenza activity remains low across, but more states are reporting increased influenza activity.

Clinical Laboratory Influenza Testing:
Forty clinical laboratories reported performing 1,454 influenza diagnostic tests, mostly rapid influenza diagnostic tests (RIDT). Of those, 112 (7.7%) were positive for influenza. Of those testing positive, 92 (82.1%) were influenza type A and 20 (17.9%) were influenza type B.

State Laboratories Administration Influenza Testing:
The DHMH Laboratories Administration performed a total of 87 PCR tests for influenza. Forty (46.0%) specimens tested positive. Of those, 39 (97.5%) were Type A (H1N1) and one (2.5%) was type A (H3N2). PCR testing is more reliable than RIDT.

Thirty-eight clinical laboratories reported performing 1,830 influenza diagnostic tests, mostly rapid influenza diagnostic tests (RIDT). Of those, 334 (18.3%) were positive for influenza. Of those testing positive, 297 (88.9%) were influenza type A and 37 (11.1%) were influenza type B. The DHMH Laboratories Administration performed a total of 126 PCR tests for influenza. Seventy-seven (61.1%) specimens tested positive. Of those, all 77 (100%) were Type A (H1N1).
