(October 14, 2010) - The Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DHMH) today announced the first official case of influenza for the 2010-2011 flu season. Laboratory tests have confirmed that the flu strain involved is the H1N1 strain the caused the 2009 pandemic. During week 45 in Maryland, one hospitalization associated with influenza was reported. No outbreaks of influenza
or influenza-like illness (ILI) were reported. The proportion of visits to providers for ILI (1.5%) was below baseline, and the
proportion of Maryland residents reporting ILI was also low.

During week 45, 17 clinical laboratories reported 7
(2.1%) of 327 rapid influenza tests as positive. Four
were positive for type A, and three were positive for
type B influenza. This proportion of positive tests was
much lower than the proportion reported at this time
last season, which was 13.3%.

So far this influenza season (October 3, 2010, to January 15, 2011) clinical laboratories have reported 811 positive
rapid test results. Of those 811, 715 (88%) have been type A and 96 (12%) have been type B. The State Laboratories
Administration has reported 119 positive PCR tests for influenza. Of those, 53 (44.5%) have been for influenza type A
(H1N1), 58 (48.7%) have been for influenza type A (H3), and 8 (6.7%) have been for influenza type B.
