Dengue fever cases reported in recent days in Martinique

By RCI Martinique 02/18/2023 - 07:42

The regional health agency warns of the multiplication of dengue fever cases in Martinique. A focus has been identified in the south of the island.

Since the beginning of February 2023, 13 confirmed cases of dengue fever have been recorded by ARS Martinique. In total, more than 120 suggestive cases would have been the subject of a consultation with a general practitioner according to feedback from the Sentinel network.

An active household has been identified in Sainte-Anne and more specifically in the Belfond district. Epidemiological surveillance with laboratories and sentinel doctors has been strengthened, and control interventions have been implemented since February 10, 2023 around confirmed cases, and will continue in the application of the Surveillance, Alert and management of dengue fever outbreaks.

In this period of resurgence of dengue fever, the ARS of Martinique, the CTM and Public Health France, recall the importance of protecting yourself against mosquito bites, of systematically eliminating breeding sites and of consulting a doctor immediately. in the event of the appearance of symptoms suggestive of the disease.

From November 2019 to February 2021, Martinique had been hit by a virulent dengue epidemic with more than 30,000 cases. 17 denge-related deaths had been recorded from February 2020 to February 2021.

25 cases of dengue fever in Martinique, the authorities call for individual and collective vigilance

By RCI Web 04/03/2023 - 10:55 • Updated on 04/03/2023 - 10:54

Dengue fever does not yet circulate on a large scale in Martinique but isolated epidemic foci have been identified on the territory.

The number of confirmed or suspected dengue cases continues to increase. 25 confirmed cases of dengue fever have been identified in the territory since February 3, 2023, mainly in the municipality of Sainte Anne (Belfond district) where an epidemic focus of
around twenty cases has been detected but also isolated cases in the municipalities of Trois -Ilets, Vauclin, Diamant, François and Fort-de-France.

More than 300 clinically suggestive cases of dengue have consulted a general practitioner over the past four weeks according to estimates made from data reported by the Sentinel network.

Faced with this multiplication of cases, the current epidemiological situation corresponds to phase 2-level 1 of the PSAGE (surveillance, alert and management program for dengue epidemics), namely, "isolated epidemic outbreaks during periods of low transmission ". This phase change calls for increased vigilance and control measures against the Aedes aegypti mosquito, vector of dengue fever.

Epidemiological surveillance with medical biology laboratories and sentinel physicians has been reinforced in order to detect suspected and confirmed cases of dengue as soon as possible in order to intervene quickly to interrupt the viral chains of transmission.

The regional health agency and the territorial community of Martinique therefore call on the population to exercise the greatest individual but also collective vigilance. The authorities invite Martiniquais to systematically eliminate potential mosquito breeding sites around living areas, protect themselves against mosquito bites and immediately consult your doctor in the event of the appearance of symptoms suggestive of the disease or illness. call 15.

The dengue epidemic is progressing in Martinique and new outbreaks are identified

The circulation of the dengue virus continues to spread in our territory. Public Health France confirms a 28% increase in the number of patients seen in city medicine for dengue syndrome. The number of outbreaks is also increasing.

Alain Petit • Published on July 13, 2023 at 5:06 p.m., updated on July 13, 2023 at 5:10 p.m.

The dengue epidemic is gaining ground.

In the past 2 weeks, from June 26 to July 9, 160 patients seen in city medicine were carriers of the dengue virus, compared to 125 in the previous weeks. The increase is similar for home visits made by SOS Medecin with around twenty visits over the past two weeks compared to a dozen visits over the previous weeks (June 12 to 25).

A few dozen dengue cases have been exported to France since the start of the upsurge in cases. The dengue virus strain, the DENV-2 serotype, was identified in a majority of the cases investigated.
...
New municipalities affected

Since the beginning of 2023, 200 confirmed cases of dengue fever have been detected, 24% of them in the last four weeks. The municipalities with the highest number of cases are Sainte-Anne (59 cases) Trois-Ilets (48 cases) . During the last two weeks (between June 26 and July 9), confirmed cases of dengue were recorded in 9 municipalities: Trois Ilets, Le Diamant, Schoelcher, Rivière-Pilote, Saint-Joseph, Sainte-Anne, Trinité, Marin, Ducos and two cases with an unknown address.

Viral circulation remains active in Trois-Ilets with an active epidemic focus in Anse à l'âne.

Over the past month, twelve municipalities have reported confirmed cases of dengue fever:

6 towns to the south (le Diamant, le Marin, Rivière-Pilote, Sainte-Anne, Ducos and Trois-Ilets)
3 municipalities in the north (Saint-Joseph, Saint-Pierre, and La Trinité),
3 towns in the center (Fort-de-France, Schoelcher and Le Lamentin)
This geographic surveillance of confirmed cases demonstrates, according to SPF (Public Health France), the slow expansion of the virus.

Transition to phase 2 for the ARS

In view of the continued upsurge in dengue cases and the active circulation of the virus, the ARS has raised the level of surveillance to phase 2- level 2 of the PSAGE, namely, "focus with evolutionary potential or multiple foci with epidemiological links between them". This phase change calls for increased vigilance and control measures against the Aedes Aegypti mosquito, vector of dengue fever.
Epidemiological surveillance carried out in conjunction with private laboratories, the Martinique University Hospital and sentinel doctors has been reinforced.

Vector control interventions implemented around confirmed cases are continuing. Similarly, disinsect control operations in aircraft are carried out with ARS teams.

Health authorities recommend that you protect yourself and avoid encouraging the laying of mosquitoes by regularly emptying containers likely to retain fresh water.

Dengue fever: general mobilization in Martinique to avoid the epidemic

The multiplication of dengue fever outbreaks in various towns in Martinique confirms the extension and intensification of the circulation of dengue fever on the island. Since the beginning of 2023, 250 cases of dengue fever have been confirmed, 30% of them in the last four weeks. The level of vigilance is raised to stage 3 of the dengue PSAGE "epidemic risk".

Jean-Claude Samyde • Published on July 28, 2023 at 3:31 p.m., updated on July 28, 2023 at 4:07 p.m.

The epidemic phenomena management unit met on July 20, 2023 and the technical committee for monitoring arboviruses was consulted on July 27, 2023. The level of vigilance has been raised to stage 3 of the dengue PSAGE "epidemic risk".

Faced with this situation, all the players are mobilizing within the framework of the Dengue Epidemic Alert and Management Program (PSAGE), around the Regional Health Agency, the CTM (Territorial Collectivity of Martinique) and of the Prefect.

The intervention strategies already implemented are continuing (reinforcement of epidemiological surveillance and vector control actions around confirmed cases, aircraft disinsection control operations). These actions are supplemented by the mobilization of municipalities responsible for setting up social mobilization actions, relaying prevention messages to their constituents and carrying out cleaning operations aimed at removing waste likely to produce mosquito breeding grounds.

Martinique: The population called for vigilance in the face of the very active dengue fever epidemic

MOSQUITO The authorities recommend in particular not to let the water stagnate but also to protect yourself with long clothes and repellents

20 Minutes with AFP
Published on 08/23/23 at 05:55

Martinique is currently trying to counter the spread of dengue fever . The authorities thus called on the population on Tuesday to mobilize to fight against the epidemic which is actively circulating on the island.

"It is imperative that everyone understands that there is work to control their environment to remove (the) breeding sites," said Manuel Etienne, director of the Center for Mosquito Control and Entomological Research, during a conference in joint press with the Regional Health Agency, the prefecture and the Territorial Collectivity of Martinique.

The island in epidemic phase since August 17

Without specific treatment, the fight against dengue depends on that against the Aedes Aegypti mosquito (a species different from the tiger mosquito present in France), vector of the disease on the island. Avoid letting the water stagnate, change the water in the vases to prevent the reproduction of the mosquito or protect yourself with long clothes and repellents are all good gestures recalled on Tuesday by the authorities.

The dengue epidemic declared in Martinique and Guadeloupe: protect yourself!

Faced with the evolution of the number of dengue fever cases in the Antilles, Martinique and Guadeloupe have entered the epidemic phase since August 17, 2023. Public Health France takes stock of the situation each week and recalls the importance of the actions to be taken. to protect against mosquito bites.

Posted on August 23, 2023

In the West Indies, dengue fever circulates according to an endemo-epidemic mode of transmission with a seasonal intensity that varies from year to year. Throughout the year, it is monitored by Public Health France Antilles, which publishes regular status updates on dengue fever in these territories. For several weeks, the circulation of the dengue virus has intensified in Martinique and Guadeloupe with an increase in the number of reported cases. The Guadeloupe and Martinique Dengue Monitoring Technical
Committees met on August 17, 2023 and concluded that the epidemiological situation of dengue fever in these two territories now corresponded to an epidemic phase.

The current situation requires us to remain vigilant and apply preventive measures for people residing in the West Indies as well as travelers, on arrival or return from a stay.

Dengue virus continues to spread in the West Indies

In Guadeloupe, the circulation of the virus continues to intensify within the archipelago and is particularly active in the municipalities of Saint-François and Trois-Rivières.
Visits to the emergency room for dengue syndrome are on the increase.

In Martinique, the spread of the dengue virus is intensifying throughout the territory and hospital indicators, in particular visits to the emergency room for dengue syndrome, are on the increase.

The DENV-2 serotype was identified in a majority of cases investigated in Martinique and Guadeloupe.

In mainland France, these epidemics have the repercussions of a large number of "imported" dengue cases, with a recent stay in Martinique and Guadeloupe (more than 50% of dengue cases reported among travelers). These “imported” cases can be the source of transmission episodes. Thus, since 2010 episodes of dengue fever transmission in France have been regularly identified. Four of these episodes originated from a case on return from the West Indies. There have been a total of 28 episodes of dengue fever transmission in France, representing a total of 114 cases of dengue fever contracted in mainland France since 2010, including 66 cases in 2022.

How to avoid being contaminated: the actions to adopt

The infection is transmitted by an infected vector mosquito (having previously taken the blood of an infected person) which can, during another bite, transmit the virus to a new person.
To protect yourself and avoid being bitten by mosquitoes in regions where cases of dengue fever have been reported, the right things to do are:

Avoid the proliferation of mosquitoes
  • Eliminate standing water
  • Change the water in flower vases twice a week
  • Cover barrels and water supplies with a mosquito net
  • Clean the gutters regularly
  • Eliminate objects that can collect rainwater in and around the house
Protect yourself from mosquito bites
  • Wear long clothes
  • Sleep under an impregnated mosquito net
  • Use mosquito repellents on the skin: skin creams or lotions and which, depending on the brand, repel mosquitoes between 6 and 12 hours. Particular attention to the products used must be paid to young children and pregnant women. If using sunscreen, the repellent should be applied at least 20 minutes after applying the sunscreen. Take advice from your pharmacist.
    • apply all over the body
    • avoid face and hands
    • insist on ankles and feet
  • Use mosquito repellents other than cutaneous: electric insecticide diffusers, coils, candles, rackets.
These actions should be continued and reinforced, particularly for people with dengue fever and people living near patients.

On video - Dengue fever: the actions to adopt
Precautions to take when traveling to or returning from the West Indies

In mainland France, the Aedes albopictus mosquito (commonly known as the "tiger mosquito") is also a vector of dengue fever. Now implanted in 71 departments , this mosquito risks transmitting the disease to those around you if it bites you while you are carrying dengue on your return from your trip.
Also, during the 15 days following his return from a region where cases of dengue fever have been reported, it is recommended:

  • to continue to protect yourself against mosquito bites to prevent an Aedes mosquito from biting you and being contaminated, in turn, by the dengue virus (wear long clothes, use repellents, etc.). He could then transmit the virus to other people, during a bite;
  • to consult a doctor in case of fever, or headache, or joint and/or muscle pain, or feeling of great fatigue, or skin rashes and to tell him which regions you have returned from.

Dengue fever epidemic: still numerous cases, one death under investigation

By RCI Web and Mélissa Grutus 2023-08-25 10:32

Dengue virus circulation has been stable for the past two weeks. A death that occurred in early August is under investigation.

During the third week of August, approximately 490 clinically suggestive cases were estimated in Martinique, compared to nearly 500 the previous week. "The level of this indicator is stable between the last two weeks" , specifies Public Health France.

Since the re-emergence of the virus in January 2023, 3,500 cases have been estimated. This led to Martinique being placed in the epidemic phase. Authorities have issued a call for action to slow the spread of the virus .

The increase in the number of home visits by SOS-doctors for dengue fever increased in the third week of August (105 cases versus 86 in week 2023-32) and a total of 630 home visits for dengue syndrome were reported by the association.

In medical offices, the waiting rooms are always full.
...
Since the start of surveillance for serious cases and deaths deployed in August (week 2023-31), the death of a person with biologically confirmed dengue has been recorded in Martinique in week 2023-31. The imputability of this death to dengue is under investigation by infectiologists.

It should be noted that 28 municipalities out of 34 were affected by cases of dengue fever. Trois-Îlets, Fort-de-France, Schoelcher, Lamentin, Saint-Pierre and Ducos are the most affected municipalities.

Dengue epidemic in Martinique

September 11, 2023

EPIDEMIE%20DE%20DENGUE%20V2-11092023.png

Faced with the worrying progression of epidemiological indicators in the territory, the prefect of Martinique Jean-Christophe Bouvier, represented by the secretary general Laurence Gola de Monchy, brought together the epidemic management committee on August 22. On the advice of the Committee of Experts, phase IV level 1 (confirmed epidemic) was triggered.

Since January 2023, the number of cases suggestive of dengue fever has been estimated at more than 4,970. Of these, 1,100 cases were biologically confirmed in week 35.

The first municipalities affected were Sainte-Anne and Les Trois-Îlets, justifying the move from June 21, 2023 to Phase II level 2 corresponding to active circulation of the virus with high evolutionary potential.

Thanks to the significant rainfall that Martinique has experienced in recent weeks, dengue fever now affects 27 municipalities. In this context which attests to active viral circulation, the Prefecture, the Regional Health Agency, and the Territorial Collectivity of Martinique call on the entire population to mobilize to fight against this epidemic.

The transition to Phase IV results in a strengthening of management measures on three axes:

 Increased epidemiological monitoring, in particular hospital surveillance and the preparation of dedicated emergency channels.
 Individual and collective vector control actions focused on the detection and destruction of breeding sites, supported by municipal means of social mobilization and information of the population.
 Amplified communication with all sectors of public life: businesses, administrations, schools and tourism stakeholders to disseminate prevention messages via a multi-media campaign (posters, radio and TV spots, mobilization of partners and networks, airport, etc.)

Dengue prevention is everyone's business!

Beyond epidemiological monitoring and reinforced control actions carried out by public authorities, everyone is concerned and active in preventing the spread of dengue. “Stop the mosquitoes: baré’y! »:

Children are increasingly affected by the dengue epidemic in Martinique

The epidemiological situation in Martinique is not improving. Dengue monitoring indicators have continued to progress since the start of the epidemic which began at the end of last July. Children are also affected. Saint-Pierre and Diamant are the most affected municipalities.

Alain Petit • Published on September 22, 2023 at 12:45 p.m., updated September 22, 2023 at 12:54 p.m.

The dengue epidemic is still growing and last week (between September 11 and 17) was no exception to the rule. The increase in the estimated number of cases seen in primary care for dengue syndrome continues with 830 patients recorded last week compared to 705 between September 4 and 10. This represents an increase of 15% in 1 week.
It is estimated that 6,500 patients consulted primary care for dengue syndrome.

60% of hospitalizations concern children

The remarkable phenomenon of last week (between September 11 and 17) is that of the 67 visits to the emergency room recorded, 40 were to pediatric emergencies. These 67 visits to the emergency room resulted in 19 hospitalizations, including 8 hospitalizations of pediatric cases reported by the MFME services. Pediatric services have also reported the existence of severe thrombocytopenia .

Dengue: 8 deaths and 7 serious cases since the start of the epidemic

Monday October 2, 2023

According to the epidemiological update from Public Health France, released Friday September 29, all dengue monitoring indicators continue to progress in Guadeloupe and Martinique. In Martinique, 7 serious cases of dengue fever have been recorded since the start of the epidemic, including two pediatric cases. Pediatric services have also reported the existence of severe thrombocytopenia. For this same period, three deaths among serious cases of dengue fever were reported, two of which were directly attributable to dengue fever and one indirectly attributable to the infection. Serotyping analyzes carried out on hospital and community samples (city LABM) by the virology laboratory of the University Hospital of Martinique and by the associated CNR of Cayenne arboviruses identify that the DENV-2 serotype circulates exclusively in Martinique. Over the past two weeks, clinically suggestive cases have been reported in 17 municipalities in Martinique. The municipalities reporting the highest incidence rates are the municipalities of Anses-d'Arlets, Carbet, Diamant, Saint-Pierre and Trois-Ilets. As a reminder, the current epidemic concerns the entire island. Since the start of the year, 340 visits to the emergency room for dengue syndrome have been recorded, of which 83 visits were followed by hospitalization. In week 2023-38, 59 visits to the emergency room were recorded (versus 70 in week 2023-37), including 25 (49%) visits to the pediatric emergency room. These 59 visits to the emergency room gave rise to 11 (18.6%) hospitalizations, including three (3) hospitalizations of pediatric cases reported by the MFME services.

How to protect yourself?
The population is called upon to fight against the Aedes aegypti mosquito, vector of the disease, by adopting simple actions: eliminate larval breeding grounds, that is to say the water reserves which could allow mosquitoes to lay eggs and reproduce in flower vases, cisterns, gutters, used tires etc. You also need to protect yourself from bites. To do this, it is advisable to use a mosquito net, wear long clothes, and use repellent products such as anti-mosquito creams, lotions or sprays. An awareness campaign is underway to combat the spread of the dengue virus. During this period when weather conditions are most favorable to the proliferation of mosquitoes,

Dengue fever in Martinique: three deaths in two weeks, including a child
A.G with AFP
06/10/2023 at 2:53

Martinique and Guadeloupe have been in the epidemic phase for this tropical disease since mid-August, which is transmitted mainly by mosquito bites and can manifest itself with high fevers, headaches, body aches, nausea and skin rashes. .

The dengue epidemic continues to progress in Martinique, where three people have died since September 18, including a child, the Regional Health Agency (ARS) announced Thursday evening. The ARS, which cites Santé Publique France in its press release, indicates that these three deaths are "directly attributable to dengue fever after collegial medical examination".

Among these three victims, a nine-year-old child, living in the town of Anses-d'Arlet in the south of the island, died this week after several days of hospitalization, we learned from the mayor of the commune, Eugène Larcher.

More than 1000 cases per week

“We have set up a psychological listening unit,” the elected official told AFP. “We also alerted the ARS to come to the site to identify larval breeding sites and be able to eradicate these mosquitoes.”

For several weeks, municipalities in the south of Martinique, including Anses-d'Arlet, have displayed one of the highest incidence rates in the overseas territory, with a prevalence of 100 cases per 10,000 inhabitants according to the latest weekly bulletin from Public Health France.

According to this same source, the symbolic threshold of 1,000 cases per week was crossed last week on the Caribbean island of 352,000 inhabitants. “Since the start of the epidemic, there have been 13 serious cases including six deaths,” indicates the ARS.

Dengue epidemic: 800 new cases per week in Martinique

By RCI web 10/31/2023 - 7:47 p.m.

Martinique is currently affected by an epidemic of dengue serotype 2, to which the population has little immunity.

Since the start of the epidemic, the number of cases suggestive of dengue fever is estimated at more than 10,000 in Martinique.

In its latest bulletin relating to the dengue epidemic in Martinique, the Regional Health Agency (ARS) estimates that on average 800 new cases suggestive of dengue fever have been recorded per week over the last three weeks.

Since the start of the epidemic, the number of cases suggestive of dengue fever is estimated at more than 10,000.

The population with low immunity
The ARS notes that Martinique is currently affected by an epidemic of dengue serotype 2, to which the population has little immunity.

The municipalities with the highest incidence rates are Anses-d'Arlet, Diamant and Marin.

14 serious cases including 6 deaths
14 serious cases including 6 deaths have been reported to date.

Faced with this situation, ARS Martinique calls for vigilance and invites the population to respect prevention measures to reduce the risk of spreading the virus.

Be vigilant about symptoms
In addition to the usual known clinical signs (fever, headache, muscle pain and intense fatigue) this disease can also cause severe digestive symptoms: loss of appetite, nausea, abdominal pain, diarrhea.

The critical phase of dengue is usually between the 4th and 7th day. If clinical signs such as fever, drowsiness or intense abdominal pain (vomiting, bleeding, etc.) persist, it is strongly recommended to call center 15.

Faced with the worrying progression of epidemiological indicators in the territory, the prefect of Martinique Jean-Christophe Bouvier, represented by the secretary general Laurence Gola de Monchy, brought together the epidemic management committee on August 22, 2023. On the advice of the Committee of Experts, phase IV level 1 (confirmed epidemic) was triggered.

Dengue prevention is everyone’s business!

Beyond epidemiological monitoring and reinforced control actions carried out by public authorities, everyone is concerned and active in preventing the spread of dengue.

“Stop the mosquitoes: baré’y! »:

a slogan which reminds us that decisive actions are within everyone's reach. In order to stem the circulation of dengue fever, the Prefecture, the Regional Health Agency, and the Territorial Community of Martinique are calling on
the entire population to mobilize to fight this epidemic.

Epidemic: dengue is circulating less and less in Martinique

By RCI Web and Kathleen Bilas-Coppet 06/14/2024 - 06:13

The dengue epidemic continues to decrease in Martinique, according to the latest surveillance bulletin from Public Health France published this week (Thursday June 13, 2024). More generally, in the Americas region, the year 2024 will record a record number of dengue cases.
...
Around forty clinically suggestive cases between June 3 and 10, compared to 140 the previous week. There were also two visits to the emergency room and no hospitalizations.

Dengue surveillance indicators continue to decline in Martinique. The values are even lower today than those recorded at the very beginning of the epidemic, according to Santé Publique France.

The virus crosses the Atlantic

However, one fact calls out to the authorities: the proliferation of the virus in France. Last month, 67% of dengue cases imported into France were tourists returning from a stay in Martinique or Guadeloupe.

To limit this transmission, health authorities insist on the need to maintain or even strengthen the fight against the Aedes aegypti mosquito which carries the disease. A fight which involves the destruction of larval breeding grounds and individual protection against bites.

Regional epidemic

If the hardest part seems to be over, let us remember that the dengue epidemic has already caused 9 deaths in our territory. 30 serious cases were treated, including 11 pediatric cases.

Dengue fever is particularly virulent this year in our region. In 2024, there will be 9.3 million cases in the countries of the Americas. This is the highest number of dengue cases ever recorded in this part of the world.

If the virus is still circulating, it is no longer an epidemic according to Santé Publique France. Health authorities are now talking about a return to normal.

The dengue epidemic is over in Martinique

The number of cases clinically suggestive of dengue is lower than the values reported before the outbreak of the epidemic with around thirty clinical cases seen, on average, in medical consultations for three weeks compared to more than 200 at the start of the epidemic.

Since mid-April, around fifteen visits for dengue fever have been reported by SOS-médecins each week.

Since the start of the epidemic, it is estimated that 19,300 patients have consulted local doctors for dengue syndrome and 4,019 visits by SOS-Médecins.

9 deaths during the epidemic

The drop in hospital activity due to suspicion of dengue fever continues, with 3 visits to the emergency room over the last two weeks.

Since the start of the epidemic in July 2023, 1,649 visits to the emergency room for dengue syndrome have been recorded,
of which 385 (23.3%) visits were followed by hospitalization.

Since the start of the epidemic, 9 deaths among serious cases of dengue fever have been reported, 6 of which are directly attributable to dengue fever and 3 indirectly attributable to the infection.
