A new S-OtrH3N2 (M gene) infection in West Virginia

Yesterday, the CDC announced two new novel influenza infections in the USA in children (link). One was a child from Minnesota infected a novel A(H1N2) strain. The other individual was a child from West Virginia infected with the S-OtrH3N2 virus with the M gene. These viruses are circulating swine population, but neither of these children were exposed to swine.

The child from West Virginia is now the 11th case of S-OtrH3N2 (M gene) in the USA since July, 2011. The map below shows the distribution of the 11 reported cases by states. The initial data for this map is presented in this thread.

Re: Map - Human S-OtrH3N2 infections in the USA since 2009

The sum of the numbers in the chart seems to be far more than 11.

I believe the confusion is that this is the 11th case with the "M" gene from 2009 H1N1; there have been other human swine H3N2 infections that do not have this gene.
