Manitoba Agriculture, Food and Rural Initiatives advises the province?s free avian influenza disease testing program for small, backyard flock owners has been extended to March 31, 2008. The service provides a free examination and report on dead and live sick birds submitted by owners to the provincial veterinary laboratory.
The program is offered free to owners of small, backyard flocks to encourage participation in early disease detection for the potential arrival of Asian strains of avian influenza in Manitoba. Larger poultry producers already have significant bio-security measures in place to monitor the health of their flocks.
Producers who experience a high mortality in flocks over two weeks of age or a large drop in egg production should submit birds for testing. Early detection of disease will help small flock owners to solve health problems in their birds and early detection of the Asian strain of avian influenza will help protect the health of small flock owners and the safety of Manitoba?s poultry industry.
Producers can deliver dead or live birds directly to the provincial veterinary diagnostic laboratory for testing. Birds can also be taken to local veterinarians for submission to the provincial lab but producers will be required to pay a shipping and handling fee to the clinic.
Full program details and a copy of the submission form can be obtained at:
www.gov.mb.ca/agriculture/livestock/poultry/bba13s05.html.
The Veterinary Diagnostic Services Laboratory is located in the Agricultural Services Complex at the main University of Manitoba campus in south Winnipeg. Samples must be live sick chickens, fresh dead birds or dead birds that have been chilled or frozen. For instructions on shipping birds from outside Winnipeg call 204-945-7636 or 204-945-8738.
