The number of people hospitalized with COVID-19 in Manitoba continued its steady climb on Wednesday, cracking 300 for the first time.

Of the 303 people now in hospital with the illness, 50 are in intensive care, Chief Provincial Public Health Officer Dr. Brent Roussin said at a news conference.

Those numbers have shot up since the beginning of November, with coronavirus-linked hospitalizations in Manitoba more than doubling from 140 three weeks ago. The number of patients in intensive care has nearly tripled in the same period of time.

Another 349 new cases of COVID-19 and nine more deaths linked to the illness were also announced in Manitoba on Wednesday...

Roughly 70 per cent of Manitoba's total COVID-19 deaths happened this month, the province's chief public health officer said on Thursday as he announced 10 more people had lost their lives to the illness.

"These deaths are much more than numbers. These are loved ones who are sorely missed right now," Dr. Brent Roussin said at a news conference.

"We can't continue with these daily case counts. We can't continue to list off this many Manitobans lost daily."

Since the start of November, 185 people in Manitoba have died of COVID-19, Roussin said, compared to 60 in the entire month of October.

Manitoba's chief public health officer repeated his plea for people to stay home and reduce their contacts on Friday, as he warned the province's health-care system may not be able to sustain the COVID-19 numbers it's seeing for much longer.

With a record-high 322 people in hospital with the illness — up from 307 on Thursday — Dr. Brent Roussin said health-care providers are overwhelmed as high COVID-19 case counts and hospitalizations push the system to its limits.

"We need to step up as Manitobans now to decrease that burden on our health-care system," he said at a news conference, where he announced an additional 344 cases of COVID-19 and 14 more deaths linked to the illness.

While the number of new cases announced Friday was a drop from 383 reported the day before, Roussin said the numbers are still a cause for concern.

"Although we don't see the dramatic climb in numbers, we're at a state of numbers that we can't maintain. We're not going to be able to have enough capacity to maintain these numbers for much longer."

As of midnight, Manitoba's intensive care units were operating at 152 per cent of their pre-COVID-19 capacity.

Just over 40 per cent of ICU beds taken up by patients battling the illness caused by the novel coronavirus, Shared Health Chief Nursing Officer Lanette Siragusa said at the news conference.

Thirty-two of the 70 patients on ventilators across Manitoba as of Friday are COVID-19-positive, Siragusa said...

A boy under the age of 10 is among 10 more deaths linked to COVID-19 announced in Manitoba on Saturday.

The boy in the Winnipeg health region is the youngest person in the province to die from the illness.

There are also 487 new cases of COVID-19 in Manitoba on Saturday, the province says in a news release.

Five of the deaths announced Saturday are linked to known outbreaks in Manitoba. They include a man in his 70s and a woman in her 90s linked to the Gilbert Plains Personal Care Home, a man in his 80s linked to Fairview Home in Brandon, a woman in her 80s linked to Heritage Lodge Long Term Care Home in Winnipeg and a man in his 90s linked to Park Manor Care in Winnipeg.

The remaining deaths announced Saturday are two women (in their 60s and 80s) from the Winnipeg health region, a man in his 60s from the Interlake-Eastern Health region and a woman in her 80s from the Southern Health region, the province's release says.

Manitoba hit a new record high for COVID-19 hospitalizations with 342 people in hospital on Monday, as the province added 343 new cases to its total. There are 43 positive patients in intensive care units, down one from Sunday.

Chief of Manitoba First Nation hit with COVID-19 calls for military to step in

WINNIPEG -- A chief of a northern Manitoba First Nation is calling for the military to step in as the community faces an outbreak of COVID-19 cases which has grown to 60 cases.

Late Sunday evening, Shamattawa First Nation Chief Eric Redhead sent an urgent message to members of the community – stay home.

"I'm lost for words right now," he wrote in a Facebook post on Sunday, after reporting 30 new cases of COVID-19 had been reported on the community that day.

"We have more members of the rapid response team coming tomorrow. I am also pushing for the Canadian military to help with their medical expertise."

On Monday, Manitoba NDP MP Niki Ashton said the outbreak on Shamattawa had grown to 60 confirmed cases of COVID-19.

In a letter to the federal Minister of National Defence Harjit Sajjan, Ashton echoed the chief's calls for military support.

"The acute housing crisis in Shamattawa has meant that COVID-19 has spread much faster than in other communities and people do not have the ability to self-isolate," Ashton wrote in the letter...

There are now more COVID-19 patients in Manitoba's hospitals and intensive care units than ever before, the province's top doctor says, after a week in which the number of people in hospital with the illness went up almost every day.

That trend continued on Friday, when Chief Provincial Public Health Officer Dr. Brent Roussin announced 361 people hospitalized with COVID-19, up from 357 on Thursday.

There are 14 more deaths, including a man from the Winnipeg Health region in his 20s, and 383 new cases of COVID-19 in Manitoba on Sunday, according to a provincial news release.

That brings the total number of deaths related to the virus to 395.

The man in his 20s and a woman in the same age bracket whose death was announced Saturday are the second-youngest people in Manitoba to die from the illness, after the death of a boy under the age of 10 last week.

Manitoba's top doctor says nearly a month of widespread closures helped avert some worst case COVID-19 scenarios this fall, though even as those benefits surface, the high caseload and heavy toll on health-care and families continues.

"These restrictions have made a difference," said Chief Public Health Officer Dr. Brent Roussin. "We were obviously expecting them to go down further."

Roussin announced 325 cases on Monday. Of 12 new deaths, nearly half are linked to care home or hospital outbreaks, and all involved people over 60.

The five-day test positivity rate is at 13.7 per cent provincewide and 14.6 for Winnipeg.

There are 310 people in hospital due to the illness, down 38 from Sunday, with 39 people in intensive care, down from 43 on Sunday...

Strict Manitoba health orders extended through the holidays, but they come with some changes

WINNIPEG -- Manitoba's strict public health orders are being extended over the holiday season, but some changes are coming to the orders including an about-face on drive-in church services and the ability to buy holiday-related items in-store.

On Tuesday, Dr. Brent Roussin, Manitoba's chief public health officer, and Premier Brian Pallister announced the current round of health orders, which were set to expire on Dec. 11, will be extended until January 8, 2021.

The majority of these health orders will go unchanged – the limits on private indoor gatherings remains restricted to household contacts only...

Manitoba announced 280 new COVID-19 cases Wednesday and 18 more deaths — the second-highest number of deaths reports on a single day since the start of the pandemic.

The deaths include a man in his 40s and two women in their 50s from the Winnipeg region, one of them related to an outbreak at Health Sciences Centre, Chief Provincial Public Health Officer Dr. Brent Roussin said at his Wednesday news conference.

More than half of the 18 deaths are related to outbreaks at hospitals or personal care homes.

That includes two at Winnipeg's Park Manor Care Home, which is in the midst of one the worst current coronavirus outbreaks at a Manitoba personal care home. Almost 80 per cent of its 82 residents tested have positive for COVID-19.

There are 293 new COVID-19 cases in Manitoba today, and another 13 people have died from the illness, Manitoba's top doctor says.

There are now 298 people in hospital with COVID-19 in Manitoba, Chief Provincial Public Health Officer Dr. Brent Roussin said at a news conference on Thursday, marking a small drop from 300 on Wednesday. That number includes 43 in intensive care, which is up from 38 the last two days.

It's the first time in more than two weeks that Manitoba has had fewer than 300 people with COVID-19 in hospital (on Nov. 24, there were 292).

Manitoba's critical-care program is currently running at 165 per cent of its pre-pandemic capacity, with 119 of its beds in use, a spokesperson for Manitoba Shared Health said.

Manitoba's five-day test positivity rate, a rolling average of the COVID-19 tests that come back positive, is down slightly to 13.3 per cent from 13.5 per cent on Wednesday. In Winnipeg, the rate is now 13.9 per cent.

The most recent deaths include nine linked to outbreaks at care homes, including six connected to Winnipeg's Charleswood Care Centre and another two linked to the city's Park Manor Care Home.

There are 447 new COVID-19 cases in Manitoba on Friday and 14 more people have died from the illness, Manitoba's top doctor says.

Many of those new cases are confirmation tests of rapid tests done in northern communities, Chief Provincial Public Health Officer Dr. Brent Roussin said at a Friday news conference.

The latest deaths, which include two men in their 50s from the Winnipeg health region and eight other deaths connected to outbreaks at care homes and health-care facilities, bring Manitoba's coronavirus-linked death toll to 465, Roussin said.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, about 7.5 per cent of people who've contracted COVID-19 in Manitoba have had severe outcomes, Roussin said. And since Thanksgiving — about two months ago — the province's death rate linked to the illness has increased by more than nine times, he said...

The province is reporting 273 new cases of COVID-19 in Manitoba and seven more deaths on Sunday, according to a news release.

That brings the total number of deaths related to the novel coronavirus to 490.

It's the lowest number of deaths reported in a single day since Nov. 23, according to provincial data.

All but one of the seven deaths are linked to existing outbreaks, including:

A woman in her 70s linked to an outbreak at Kin Place in Oakbank.
A man in his 60s linked to an outbreak at the St. Norbert Personal Care Home.
A woman in her 70s linked to an outbreak at the Charleswood Care Centre.
A man in his 70s linked to an outbreak in the N3W unit at Concordia Hospital.
A man in his 80s linked to an outbreak at the Maples Long Term Care Home.
A man in his 80s linked to an outbreak at Park Manor.

A woman in her 60s from the Northern health region is among the fatalities.

Of the new cases, most — 166 — are in Winnipeg with another 50 new cases in the Northern health region, 22 in the Southern Health region, 18 in the Prairie Mountain Health Region and 17 in the Interlake-Eastern health region...

WINNIPEG -- The province has reported nine more deaths related to COVID-19, inching the total number of deaths closer to 500.

The most recent deaths reported as of Monday morning range from people in their 40s to people in their 90s. All but one of them were in the Winnipeg region, with the majority connected to personal care home outbreaks.

This brings the total number of deaths related to COVID-19 in Manitoba to 499.

The province also reported 241 cases of COVID-19 as of Monday morning, bringing the total number of cases in the province to 21,264...
