Man in his 40s, senior die from COVID-19 Thanksgiving Monday with 77 new cases

Manitoba public health officials have identified the 33rd and 34th deaths in the province due to COVID-19.

One is a previously announced case, a woman more than 100 years old from Winnipeg linked to the Parkview Place outbreak.

The other is a man in his 40s from Winnipeg.

There are also 77 new cases of the virus identified as of 9:30 a.m. bringing the total number of cases in Manitoba to 2,655.

Monday’s data show:

5 cases in the Interlake–Eastern health region
5 cases in the Northern health region
2 cases in the Prairie Mountain Health region
9 cases in the Southern Health–Sant? Sud health region
56 cases in the Winnipeg health region

There are also 1,131 active cases and 1,490 individuals have recovered from COVID-19.

Right now, there are 25 people in hospital and four people in intensive care...

Broad shutdowns will start in Winnipeg and surrounding areas on Monday as Manitoba moves its capital area to the red, or critical, level — the highest stage of its pandemic response scale — following days of record-shattering COVID-19 case announcements.

Movie theatres, concert halls, sports facilities and restaurant dining rooms in the region will be ordered to close starting Monday, as officials struggle to control a rising tide of cases.

Elective and non-urgent surgeries and diagnostic procedures in the region will be suspended to preserve capacity in a strained health-care system, said Chief Provincial Public Health Officer Dr. Brent Roussin on Friday.

"You can just see these numbers in the last week, the strain on our health-care system ... we were left with no choice," said Roussin. "We have to deal with this virus and the transmission now."

The rest of Manitoba will move up to the orange, or restricted, level starting Monday, Roussin said. The order will limit gathering sizes to five and reduce capacity in public-facing businesses.

The new measures will be in place for at least two weeks, Roussin said Friday...

WINNIPEG -- Health officials announced on Monday that there have been five new deaths linked to COVID-19 in Manitoba.

The announcement was made by Dr. Brent Roussin, the province's chief provincial public health officer, and Lanette Siragusa, the chief nursing officer for Shared Health.

All of the new deaths are from the Winnipeg Health Region and include a woman in her 50s, a woman in her 60s linked to the St. Boniface Hospital outbreak, a woman in her 70s who is linked to the Parkview Place outbreak, a woman in her 80s connected to the outbreak at Simkin Centre, and a woman in her 90s linked to the Maples personal care home outbreak...

WINNIPEG -- Sixty of Manitoba’s healthcare workers tested positive for COVID-19 in the span of one week, according to provincial data.

The Manitoba government’s surveillance data from Oct. 18 to 24 shows since the start of the pandemic 216 healthcare workers have contracted the disease, which is up 60 cases from the week before.

The government noted that of these workers, 135 are allied health professionals, 53 are nurses/licensed practical nurses, and 14 are physicians or physicians in training.

The data, which is used to monitor the intensity, characteristics, transmission and geographical spread of COVID-19 in Manitoba, shows that 65 per cent of these workers were infected through close contact with a known case and nearly six per cent got it from travel. For 28.6 per cent of cases, the source of infection is unknown...

COVID-19 cases more than double within Manitoba’s largest jail outbreak

WINNIPEG -- Cases of COVID-19 have spiked within the Headingley Correctional Centre in Manitoba, more than doubling in one day.

On Tuesday, provincial health officials confirmed with CTV News the number of cases at the Headingley Correctional Centre increased to 89 active cases.

Since the outbreak was declared at the jail in mid-October, Headingley has seen 110 total cases including 86 inmates and 24 staff members.

There have been 21 recoveries, though the province does not say how many inmates are included in this number...

Manitoba reports 5 more coronavirus deaths, 243 new cases, tighter restrictions coming to south

The ongoing surge of new COVID-19 cases continued in Manitoba Friday as health officials reported 243 new cases, five additional deaths and said further restrictions are coming to the province’s Southern Health region.

The new cases bring the province’s total reported since March to 7,419 and include 4,286 that are active, according to the province’s online COVID-19 dashboard.

Health officials say two of the five new deaths — a man in his 90s and a woman in her 90s — are both linked to an ongoing outbreak at Victoria Hospital in Winnipeg. Another, a woman in her 90s from Winnipeg is connected to an outbreak at Maples Manor in Winnipeg.

The other two deaths include a woman in her 40s from the Northern health region and a woman in her 60s from the Interlake-Eastern region.

They bring the province’s total number of deaths from COVID-19 reported since March to 96.

Southern region moves to critical

Manitoba’s chief public officer of health, Dr. Brent Roussin said spiking cases in southern Manitoba — including 52 new cases Friday — mean the region will move to red, or critical on the province’s COVID-19 response system starting Monday.

“We’ve been messaging to Manitobans for quite some times about the importance of the fundamentals and to reduce their contacts, but as we can see our cases have gone in the wrong direction,” he said.

“We’re seeing more cases, more strain on our health-care system and so further action is required.”...

There are 365 news cases of COVID-19 and three deaths in Manitoba on Monday, health officials say.

The test positivity rate for Manitoba rose to 9.5 per cent, which is a record; it's 9.3 per cent in Winnipeg.

About two-thirds of the new cases are in the Winnipeg health region.

Chief Provincial Public Health Officer Dr. Brent Roussin said he has met with Premier Brian Pallister to discuss further restriction possibilities.

"We're at a critical point where we need to change these dynamics," Roussin said.

The update comes after Manitoba breached the grim milestone of 100 COVID-19 deaths over the weekend. The death toll is now at 109.

The death of a Winnipeg man in his 80s is tied to the outbreak at Victoria Hospital, and a man in his 70s and a woman in her 90s from the Southern Health Region have also died.

A record 192 people are in hospital, 28 of them in intensive care, with COVID-19.

Lanette Siragusa, chief nursing officer with Manitoba Shared Health, said some intensive care unit capacity remains, but not a lot, in Winnipeg and Brandon. Critical care teams are working on expanding ICU capacity, she said...

Nine more Manitobans are dead from COVID-19, as the province hit new records for its test positivity rate and the number of patients in hospital with the illness on Wednesday.

That single-day total surpasses the number of deaths in the first five months of the pandemic combined.

Manitoba announced 431 new COVID-19 cases, and Wednesday's total of nine is the highest number of deaths reported in a single day in the province since the start of the pandemic.

Half of the latest deaths are linked to outbreaks at care homes or hospitals. A total of 123 people have now died from the illness in Manitoba.

Records were also set Wednesday with 218 people in hospital with COVID-19, including 32 in intensive care...

Manitoba announced three more deaths from COVID-19 on Tuesday and reported 184 new cases of the illness, setting a record for the most cases reported in the province in a single day.

Two of the deaths — a man and a woman both in their 80s — are connected with an outbreak at St. Boniface Hospital in Winnipeg, now the deadliest outbreak at a Manitoba hospital since the start of the pandemic. Its first death was announced over the weekend.

The third death reported Tuesday — a woman in her 60s — is connected with the Parkview Place care home outbreak, which has led to 19 deaths and is the worst care-home outbreak in the province. On Monday, an official with the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority confirmed the outbreak now spans most floors inside the care home, with 121 infections between residents and staff.

At St. Boniface, 22 patients and 10 staff had tested positive as of Monday, the health authority said. The hospital on Tuesday afternoon posted a statement updating that number to 23 patients and 10 staff.

The statement also said a patient died at St. Boniface after being transferred from Victoria General Hospital, where an outbreak announced last week in two of its family medicine units had grown to 38 people as of Tuesday, including 19 patients and 19 staff members. The death associated with the Victoria hospital outbreak was not one of the three deaths announced by the province on Tuesday...

As Manitoba's tally of COVID-19 cases shot past 10,000 on Friday, the chief public health officer reflected on the pandemic journey that has brought the province to a critical point.

With 437 new cases of the illness and five more deaths, Dr. Brent Roussin repeated his plea for Manitobans to follow public health advice to stay home whenever possible and stop socializing with people they don't live with.

"We need to make [the] necessary changes now to bring these numbers down," Roussin said at a news conference.

And as key pandemic indicators reach new heights in Manitoba, with hospitalizations at a record 231 and a test positivity rate that had climbed to 11.6 per cent (and 12.2 in Winnipeg) on Friday, the situation has evolved to one of the worst-case scenarios the province projected in COVID-19 modelling released this past spring, he said.

Manitoba broke its record for most new COVID-19 cases in a day on Sunday, as the province announced an additional 494 people have tested positive for the illness.

That update comes just over two weeks after the province posted its previous highest number of new cases — 480 on Oct. 30.

Ten more people in Manitoba have now died of COVID-19, the province said in a news release.

That tally includes seven people linked to the outbreak at the Maples Long Term Care Home in Winnipeg, and comes after Manitoba reported a record 15 deaths in one day on Saturday, most of which were also linked to the outbreak at the Maples Long Term Care Home.

The north Winnipeg care home has become the site of the province's deadliest COVID-19 outbreak, and is currently the subject of an independent investigation.

At least 32 residents there have died during the outbreak, according to Revera, the for-profit company that runs the site...

Manitoba's top doctor is reprimanding people who continue to go out and chastising businesses looking for ways around public health orders as the province announces 10 more deaths and 392 cases on Monday.

"Our health-care providers are becoming overwhelmed," Chief Provincial Public Health Officer Dr. Brent Roussin said, announcing record-high hospitalization numbers. "We can't sustain this number of cases in our health-care system."

Manitoba also has a record-high 13 per cent five-day test positivity rate. The rate in Winnipeg is 12.8 per cent.

Manitoba bans in-store sales of non-essential items, visitors to homes with some exceptions

Manitoba is clamping down harder on private gatherings and businesses selling non-essential items in an effort to slow the alarming rise in new coronavirus infections in the province.

New COVID-19 public health orders will forbid people from having anyone inside their home who doesn't live there, with few exceptions, and prohibit businesses from selling non-essential items in stores.

... we saw people gathering at rallies, we saw crowded parking lots at big box stores, we saw people continue to go out for non-essential items," Roussin said at a news conference Thursday.

"So we're left with no choice but to announce further measures to protect Manitobans, to limit the spread of this virus."

Non-essential items include books, toys, jewelry, flowers, perfume, consumer electronics and sporting equipment.

Manitoba health officials say there are 438 new COVID-19 cases Friday and listed nine more deaths, including a man in his 20s, bringing the provincial death toll to 207.

"This is tragic to see all of these listings every single day now," said Chief Provincial Public Health Officer Dr. Brent Roussin. "These are not just numbers. This was a son, a Manitoban."

The man in his 20s is the youngest person to die of the illness in Manitoba.

A record 281 people are in hospital, up from 263 yesterday, and the provincial test positivity rate dropped to 13.7 per cent, down from 14 on Thursday.

A record 281 COVID-19 patients are in hospital, with 43 of them in intensive care.

The 10-day test positivity rate in the Steinbach health district is at 40 per cent, and there have been 24 Steinbach deaths since the beginning of the pandemic, Roussin said.

Winnipeg's test positivity is at 13.7 per cent.

"When you're looking at something like 40 per cent … this is a very concerning number," Roussin said...

There are 243 new cases of COVID-19 in Manitoba on Sunday and 12 more people have died from the illness, the province says in a news release.

That update marks the lowest single-day increase in new COVID-19 cases in Manitoba since Nov. 14, when 237 new cases were announced.

There are 288 people now in hospital with COVID-19 in Manitoba, 52 of whom are in intensive care, the release says — setting two new records in the province.

The deaths announced Sunday are all people from the Winnipeg health region, the release says.

They mostly include people whose cases are not linked to any known outbreaks: four men (in their 40s, 70s, 80s and 90s) and three women (in their 70s, 80s and 90s).

Also among the deaths are a man in his 60s linked to the Victoria General Hospital outbreak, a woman in her 80s linked to the Parkview Place Long Term Care Home outbreak, a woman in her 80s linked to the Maples Long Term Care Home outbreak, a man in his 90s linked to the Beacon Hill Lodge outbreak and a woman in her 90s linked to the St. Norbert Personal Care Home outbreak.

The Maples and Parkview Places personal care homes, owned by for-profit company Revera, have become the sites of Manitoba's largest COVID-19 outbreaks.

As of Monday, 40 residents at the Maples home had died of the illness, according to the province, making the outbreak at that facility Manitoba's deadliest. In a statement on Saturday, Revera said 27 residents at Parkview Place had died of COVID-19.

The update brings Manitoba's coronavirus-linked death toll to 229, the release says. It comes at the end of a week when Manitoba announced the deaths of three people with COVID-19 under the age of 40. That list includes a man in his 20s, the youngest person in the province to die of COVID-19.

WINNIPEG -- Manitoba has once again set a record of COVID-19 cases, with more than 540 people testing positive for COVID-19 as of Monday morning.

Dr. Brent Roussin, the chief provincial public health officer, reported 543 new cases of COVID-19 on Monday. This is the highest single-day spike of cases the province has seen yet.

The majority of the cases were reported in the Winnipeg region, which had 368 new cases as of Monday morning. The five-day test positivity rate in Winnipeg is now at 13.8 per cent.

The Southern Health region also reported a significant spike in cases, with 118 more cases...

The number of patients in hospital due to the illness has declined slightly to 292, down from 296 yesterday. Active cases in intensive care are also down five to 47.
