More changes could be coming to Manitoba and how the province deals with COVID-19 as health officials say the shift from a pandemic response to an endemic response is underway.

Dr. Jazz Atwal, the deputy chief provincial public health officer, said on Wednesday that if the COVID situation continues to improve, the requirement to self-isolate when testing positive for COVID-19 could turn into a recommendation.

"No matter what your respiratory symptoms are, it's still recommended to stay home when you are sick. To give your body time to recover and to reduce the likelihood of spreading that illness to someone else," said Atwal.

This change would come into place on March 15, the same day that the mask mandate is expected to be lifted...

... Looking at the daily COVID data from the province, officials said two more deaths have been recorded, bringing the total to 1,682.

In hospital, there are 464 people requiring care due to COVID, including 30 people in the ICU.

Manitoba added 163 cases on Wednesday, bringing the active case count to 9,776, but officials have said those numbers are likely different as at-home tests are not recorded in the daily numbers.

The five-day test positivity rate is 13.7 per cent...

COVID-19 BULLETIN #573

Information about COVID-19 in Manitoba is updated on Thursdays at 12:30 p.m. on these dashboards:
Public Health Orders

Public health orders requiring masks in public places ends on March 15. However, masks will continue to be required for all individuals attending a health-care facility, including visitors.

Also effective March 15, the public health orders for isolation of individuals who have tested positive for COVID-19 are being removed. The orders are being transitioned to public health guidelines, similar to how other communicable diseases are managed.

Isolation for COVID-19 is still advised in the following situations:
  • people with symptoms should stay home and isolate for five days after symptoms start until they have no fever and other symptoms have improved over the past 24 hours;
  • individuals who have tested positive but do not develop symptoms should isolate for five days from the date of the test;
  • individuals should wear a well-fitting, well-made mask if they must have contact with other people while ill or when their isolation is finished for 10 days after the onset of symptoms or test date if asymptomatic; and
  • people who have symptoms or test positive should avoid non-essential visits with higher-risk people or at higher-risk settings for 10 days after the onset of their symptoms or test date if asymptomatic.
People can continue to help prevent the spread of COVID-19 by getting vaccinated, staying home when sick, assessing their risk and making decisions about using masks, physical distancing and other actions based on those risks.

Schools and child-care facilities continue to follow public health guidance on mask use. As of March 15, they will no longer be required for staff or students. Physical distancing requirements and cohorts will also no longer be required in these settings at that time.

Testing

Starting March 14, COVID-19 testing sites will be available on a walk-in basis only, with the exception of pre-operative patients. Pre-operative patients can continue to make appointments by calling 1-855-268-4318. Testing locations can be found at https://manitoba.ca/covid19/testing/locations.html.

Key Updates

Public health officials are highlighting the following trends. As of March 9, Manitoba saw:
  • 136 new hospitalizations, a 2.9 per cent decrease from the previous week; and
  • 21 new ICU cases, a 50 per cent increase from the previous week.
As compared to people with three doses of the vaccine, those who are not fully vaccinated are:
  • five times as likely to be hospitalized with COVID-19;
  • seven times as likely to be admitted to an intensive care unit; and
  • eight times as likely to die with COVID-19.
The province is currently reviewing the level of direct COVID-19 services it delivers as it transitions to a time without the same level of public health orders in place. As more and more Manitobans get vaccinated, the demand for super sites is reducing and the availability of vaccine at pharmacies and doctors’ offices has increased. More information on changes to these sites will be announced in the near future.

Individuals who have been tested for COVID-19 are now able to access all past COVID-19 test results at the Shared Health portal at https://sharedhealthmb.ca/covid19/test-results/. Previously, only the most current test results were available. Self-administered rapid antigen test results are not available through the portal. Individuals who experience an issue accessing their records can request support at https://forms.gov.mb.ca/covid-immuni...est/index.html.

Public health officials advise 18 new deaths in people with COVID-19 are being reported today:

Enforcement

The Manitoba government is providing an update on ongoing enforcement efforts to protect Manitobans from the spread of COVID-19. A total of 1,196 inspections occurred, which resulted in two warnings and two tickets issued for the week of Feb. 28 to March 6 including two $298 tickets in Southern Health-Santé Sud to individuals for failure to wear a mask in an indoor public place.

Manitoba reports 2 new COVID-19 deaths as hospitalizations drop 7
1 more person with illness in intensive care, online dashboard says
CBC News · Posted: Mar 11, 2022 12:27 PM CT | Last Updated: 1 hour ago

Manitoba reported two new deaths linked to COVID-19 as the number of people in hospital after getting the illness dropped by seven on the province's online coronavirus dashboard Friday.

There are now 417 COVID-19 patients in hospital in Manitoba, including 23 in intensive care — up one since Thursday.

The deaths bring the total number in the province linked to COVID-19 to 1,710. More details about the people who died are expected to be released in the province's next coronavirus bulletin on Thursday.

Manitoba again reported 200 new cases of COVID-19, the same number announced Thursday. However, that number is believed to be a significant undercount, because the province continues to restrict access to PCR testing and does not track results from rapid antigen tests people do at home.

There were 953 more PCR tests done in Manitoba on Thursday, the dashboard says.

The province's five-day test positivity rate is up to 14 per cent, an increase from 12.7 per cent on Thursday...

2 years into the pandemic, Manitoba suffers Canada's 2nd-highest COVID-19 death rate
Relatively poor health going into pandemic a factor in disproportionate deaths, experts say
Bartley Kives · CBC News · Posted: Mar 11, 2022 5:00 AM CT | Last Updated: 1 hour ago

...Two years into the pandemic, Manitoba continues to have the second-highest COVID-19 death rate in Canada: 123 COVID deaths for every 100,000 people, according to federal data.

Only Quebec has a higher death rate due to the disease, with 164 COVID deaths per 100,000 people over the course of the pandemic.

Manitoba Health Minister Audrey Gordon did not respond to requests for comment about Manitoba's high COVID-19 death rate.

There is likely no single reason, says Souradet Shaw, a Winnipeg epidemiologist.

"Instead, it is likely that a combination of factors has contributed to what we are seeing overall," he said.

Dr. Brent Roussin, Manitoba's chief provincial public officer, attributed part of Manitoba's high COVID-19 death toll to the outbreaks that swept through Winnipeg personal care homes during the fall and winter of 2020, when the second wave of the pandemic claimed the lives of hundreds of seniors.

The relatively poor health of Manitobans prior to the pandemic also played a role, Roussin said.

"Certainly one of the thoughts is the underlying health and the underlying determinants," he said.

Those determinants, more formally known as the social determinants of health, include comparatively poor access to health services in rural and remote Manitoba communities, especially First Nations...

The number of patients in hospital due to the coronavirus dropped three to 414, the province's online dashboard says.

Intensive care unit COVID-19 patients also dropped three to 20.

The deaths announced Monday bring Manitoba's total to 1,716.

The province's five-day test-positivity rate rose 1.6 percentage points, to 15.6 per cent.

Another 111 new COVID-19 cases were confirmed by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests on Monday, although limited access to the tests means this is a significant undercount of the true number of cases in the province.

An additional 304 cases were confirmed by PCR tests over Saturday and Sunday...
