Suspected Ebola case causes panic in Manipur

Panic gripped Manipur when a Japanese woman who had made a stop-over at Imphal was suspected of having infected with Ebola virus. The tourist, identified as Kawakubo Yuko (27), had already visited five countries. She was coming to Nagaland and had checked in at a hotel in Imphal as she was planning to visit some places in the state. She came to Manipur from Myanmar by road.

Doctors said that she had started showing symptoms of a patient suffering from Ebola. She was shifted to a private hospital in Imphal. Local tests for some common ailments proved negative.

The patient has been moved to Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS) in Imphal for better medical care. Sources at the hospital said that she has been kept in isolation at the female medicine ward special ward unit 3 bed no 7 of JNIMS.

While test results are still awaited, if found positive for Ebola, she might be shifted to Regional Institute of Medical Sciences, Imphal since isolation ward was not available at JNIMS.

With this development, tourists visiting Manipur both by road or air may now be screened for Ebola virus disease.

Imphal, Oct. 5: A 27-year-old Japanese woman, who recently crossed into Manipur through Moreh, the state’s border township neighbouring Myanmar, gave health officials an ebola scare when she complained of high fever and had to be admitted to Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences here.

The health officials initially suspected that Kaw Kubo had contracted ebola because the state government instructed them to screen tourists for ebola if they were suffering from high fever. The officials today ruled out the disease after the patient responded to two days of treatment.

Manipur is on an ebola alert following instructions from the Union home ministry.

Ebola checkgates have been opened at Moreh, Mao Gate, Manipur’s gate to Nagaland, Jiribam, Manipur’s gate to Cachar district of Assam and also at Imphal airport. However, sources said ebola screening checkgates do not have medical staff.

According to records maintained by the hospital, Kubo started her trip to Asian countries in June this year. Before entering Manipur, she had visited Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand and Myanmar. However, she never visited any African country. The hospital has recorded her recent travel activities. She was to proceed to Kohima from Imphal.

Health department officials collected her blood samples. These would be sent tomorrow to the National Institute of Virology, Pune. Official sources said the results would be known within 48 hours.

Think the authorities there should be more concerned about bird flu in this case, either an H5 or H7??

I suspect there must be a haemorrhagic component to make them think ebola??

An entire ward was shut down here for a sick Japanese woman who had never even been to Africa! This is an unreasonable response and may have put other lives in danger by stretching already thin resources. India has a quarter of the bed capacity per 1,000 population of the US.
