IMPHAL, Oct 8: Amidst ongoing surveillance and other post-operation measures after the bird flu outbreak in July, the government of India is poised to pronounce Manipur to be bird flu-free soon, according to a statement issued by the state veterinary department.
In the interim, the veterinary department has served stern warning against the import, rearing, sale and dressing of live chicken within the core Imphal area, declaring that poultry products found sold or reared in violation of the ban in this connection would be summarily confiscated without compensation.
The statement said the department is actively engaged in surveillance and post-operation measures in various nooks and corners of the state, and particularly in the 5 to 10 km radius area from the epicentre of the July outbreak. Samples from poultry have been collected in four phases and sent to the High Security Animal Disease Laboratory, Bhopal.
Stating that the government of India is expected to announce that the state, and the country is free of bird-flu by the second week of November, the statement said the ban on import and rearing of live chicken, live chicks or poultry feed into the 0-5 km core zone of Imphal will remain in place.
However, sale of eggs and dressed chicken meat brought in from outside the core zone is permitted, said the statement.
If anyone is found bringing in, dressing, selling or rearing live chicken, chicks or poultry in the core area in violation of the ban, the offending poultry products will be confiscated without compensation as per the law, said the statement.
