Encephalitis campaign in Manipur
OUR CORRESPONDENT

Imphal, Nov. 9: The Manipur health and family welfare department will not be able to meet the target for the Japanese encephalitis vaccination campaign that will end on Thursday and is preparing to meet it in the second phase, expected to begin soon.

The first phase of the campaign began on October 25 in the five districts of Bishnupur, Chandel, Imphal East, Imphal West and Thoubal. Children between 1 and 15 years of age have been vaccinated during the campaign.

The first phase of the campaign has covered 4,10,008 children, including 2,00,772 girls, so far, meeting 71.7 per cent of the target. Altogether 2,053 vaccination centres have been opened in the first phase.
Though the campaign will not meet the target in the first phase, department officials are happy that some achievement has been made. It has been appreciated by the Centre as well, which considers above 60 per cent coverage as good.

This is the first time that such a vaccination programme has been carried out in Manipur.

In the first phase of the campaign, the Centre selected had 109 districts across the country, including five districts of Manipur.

Manipur is considered a Japanese encephalitis endemic zone. According to official statistics, 116 suspected cases of Japanese encephalitis were reported between June and August this year. Of these, 45 cases were confirmed Japanese encephalitis cases. Fourteen deaths were officially confirmed.
?We first targeted children because the mortality rate among the children was very high. Gradually, the other age group will also be brought under the campaign. The first phase was a success. We are now preparing for the second phase,? Y. Ibechoubi, the joint director of the health and family welfare department, told The Telegraph.

The timing for the second phase has not been fixed.

Official sources said the vector-borne diseases control programme section of the state health department sent the report to the Centre to finalise the areas for the second phase.

The sources said the state health and family welfare department was planning to carry on the vaccination programme after the second phase to completely stamp out Japanese encephalitis from the state.
