Mangalore, Jun 13: Dakshina Kannada zilla panchayat chief executive officer A M Kunjappa has informed that the district deputy commissioner has been approached with a request to release 170 tonnes of rice for distribution among the chikungunya-affected families of Sullia taluk, and that the same is expected to be released within the next two days.
Placing facts during the discussion on chikungunya at the general session of the zilla panchayat held here on Thursday June 12, he informed that a list of 17,000 affected persons has been submitted to the deputy commissioner. A supplemental list will be furnished to him after the completion of survey in other villages. He also said that the disease is on the wane and the incidence of the disease in Sullia taluk which was the worst hit, has come down by 60 per cent.
As regard to concerns about the spread of the disease to Mangalore, Bantwal and other taluks of the district, Kunjappa informed that orders for procuring 25 fogging machines has been placed, and fogging will be undertaken inside the houses soon because of torrential rains.
District health officer Jagannath gave details of the activities undertaken by his department after detecting chikungunya in the district in April this year. He also added that 80,000 persons were administered with preventive medicines by conducting homoeopathy camps.
