COLOMBO, March 8 — Two hotel employees tested positive for the novel coronavirus at a luxury resort in the Maldives, the government said Saturday marking the first cases reported in the upmarket holiday destination.

The country’s health ministry said two unnamed foreign nationals working at the deluxe Kuredu Island Resort, about 150 kilometres north of the capital Male, tested positive for Covid-19.

Maldives to increase ICU capacity amid COVID-19 pandemic

MALE, March 18 (Xinhua) -- The government of Maldives has decided to increase Intensive Care Unit (ICU) capacity and bring more test kits into the country amid the COVID-19 pandemic, local media reported here Wednesday.

Spokesperson of National Emergency Operation Center (NEOC) Mohamed Mabrouq Azeez said that the government was working to increase ICU capacity by 200 beds and bring more COVID-19 test kits in order to deliver results faster...

COVID-19: Maldives considers closing borders

The government, on Tuesday, discussed the possible closure of the country's borders in response to a severe reduction in tourist arrivals due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

According to local media outlet Mihaaru, prominent members of the tourism industry and state representatives deliberated on the matter.

However, the government has yet to announce an official decision.

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the government has already banned all arrivals from China, Italy, Bangladesh, Iran, Spain, Malaysia, UK as well as parts of Germany, France and South Korea...

...17 cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed in the Maldives thus far. This includes two locals and two foreigners who have already departed from the Maldives. With 13 recoveries, the total number of active cases is currently two. However, the recovered patients will be remaining in isolation for a period of 30 days as per protocol.

The Maldives is to impose a three-hour curfew in the Mal? City area, from Thursday, as part of its efforts to curb a coronavirus spread.

The Health Protection Agency (HPA) announced the curfew from 5pm to 8pm -in Mal?, Villimal? and Hulhumal?- and the curfew is to continue until further notice.

The decision was made by the Director General of Public Health, Maimoona Aboobakuru, under the powers granted to her due to the current state of public health emergency declared in the country...

COVID-19: Lockdown of greater Male extended for 14 days

Health Protection Agency's (HPA) Director General of Public Health Maimoona Aboobakuru on Friday made the decision to extend the lockdown on greater Male region for a period of 14 days.

The lockdown was initially put in place at 1530 hours on April 15, following the first case of community transmission on COVID-19 in Maldives.

This was then extended until 1430 hours, April 17. With the latest extension, the lockdown in this area will be lifted on May 1...
