Dengue fever is spreading very fast in Mal? and other atolls of the country, the Center for Community Health and Disease Control (CCHDC) has said.

An official from the Centre said on Monday that the fever was spreading very swiftly in all the atolls and that the number of reported cases was on the rise too. According to their records, a total of 304 people were diagnosed with the fever this year and 26 percent of the reported cases were young children.

The Centre said that according to their records 156 of the reported cases were in Mal?. Most of the cases from the atolls were reported from the northern atolls, the official said.

In addition to dengue fever, viral fevers are also on the rise in Mal?, the Centre said.

According to statistics revealed by the Health Ministry, there were 2,768 cases reported in 2006, and 1,671 cases in 2007. 12 people had died from the disease during the two years.

Dengue fever is spread by mosquitoes and the Centre has advised the public to help control the breeding of mosquitoes by getting rid of any potential mosquito breeding grounds.

A viral fever is swiftly spreading across all the atolls of the country, the Health Ministry has said.

According to the Ministry?s Centre for Community Health and Disease Control has said that in addition to viral fevers, there were reports that flu, diarrhea, and dengue fever was also spreading swiftly in many islands of the Maldives. An official from the Centre said that the highest number of cases had been reported in six atolls: Haa Alifu, Haa Dhaalu, Lhaviyani, Laamu, Gaafu Alifu, and Gaafu Dhaalu atolls.

The official said that a total 1,463 cases of viral fever had been reported in Mal? between 14 June and 11 July. A total of 7,943 viral fever cases were reported between the same timeframe from the atolls, while 32,569 cases of viral fever had been reported up to 11 June this year, the official said.

The Health Ministry on Tuesday warned that the number of people being diagnosed with dengue fever was on the rise in Mal? and other islands.

A press release issued by the Centre for Community Health and Disease Control (CCHDC) said that 45 people had been treated for dengue fever within the last four weeks. The press release further said that a total of 279 people had contacted the disease this year so far and that 45 percent of the reported cases were children under the age of 10 years.

Last year, a total of 1,815 dengue fever cases were reported, with three having died of the disease. The CCHDC also said that 21 people had been treated for the more dangerous strains of the disease ? dengue hemorrhagic fever and dengue shock syndrome ? so far this year. They further said that since the disease was spread by mosquitoes it was controlling mosquitoes was crucial to controlling the spread of the disease.
