A few weeks before the team World Cup, Thomas Cup and Uber Cup, the Malaysian team were hit by the swine flu.

Coach Rashid Sidek has been hospitalized after being tested positive for H1N1 virus, and now fears that players may also be infected.

The timing is critical, not least because Malaysia is hosting the championships, which begin in a week.

KUALA LUMPUR, May 1 (Bernama) -- National singles coach Rashid Sidek and his daughter have been admitted to a private hospital today after they were certified H1N1 positive.

National Sport Institute director Datuk Dr. Ramlan Abdul Aziz said this was confirmed by Tawakal Hospital.

"We have been informed by the hospital on the matter and follow-up action will be taken by the institute and the Health Ministry to prevent the spread of the disease," he said when contacted by Bernama here on Saturday.

Abdul Rashid and his five-year-old daughter were admitted to the hospital after they were found to have symptoms of being infected with the H1N1 virus.

Rashid is one of the national coaches who will be involved in the Thomas Cup and Uber Cup tournaments at the Putra Stadium, Bukit Jalil, from May 9 to May 11.

Meanwhile, Malaysian Badminton Association (BAM) general manager Kenny Goh said medical checks would be conducted on all national players on Monday as a safety measure to ensure they were not infected with the H1N1 virus

KUALA LUMPUR, May 3 (Reuters) - Malaysia's badminton world championship prospects have been salvaged following a scare triggered when a national coach was hospitalised with swine flu.

The alarm came a week before Malaysia hosts the Thomas and Uber Cups, the men's and women's team world championships, which begin on May 9.

National Sports Institute (NSI) director Ramlan Aziz told state news agency Bernama that all 40 players, coaches and other support staff had tested negative for the H1N1 virus.

Singles coach Rashid Sidek was quarantined at the weekend after testing positive for H1N1.

"Despite the all-clear scan, the NSI and the FT (Federal Territory) health department will continue to monitor the squad to avoid any risk of infection," Ramlan said.

The tournament runs until May 16 at Putra indoor stadium in Kuala Lumpur.

Flu fears confine Chinese to barracks


SINGAPORE (Reuters) - China's badminton chiefs have banned their shuttlers from sightseeing in Kuala Lumpur to safeguard them from the H1N1 virus ahead of next week's Thomas & Uber Cups.

The Chinese men's and women's teams are strong favourites to retain their prestigious titles on May 16 and head coach Li Yongbo told reporters the players had been told to stay safely locked up unless they are playing or training.

"The players have been told to stay in their rooms. They are only allowed to go to the training venue and to the Putra Stadium," Li said at a media conference hosted by the team's sponsors Li Ning.

"We have brought our own medical team with us and are taking all sorts of precautions to ensure none of us catch the virus."

Two of Malaysia's coaches -- Misbun and Rashid Sidek -- were both treated for the H1N1 virus but have since been given a clean bill of health.

China boast world and Olympic champion Lin Dan as their top singles player in the men's Thomas Cup and he will be joined by Chen Jin, Bao Chunlai and Chen Long. For the doubles, they have named former world number ones Cai Yun-Fu Haifeng, Guo Zhengdong-Xu Chen and Chai Biao-Zhang Nan.

The Chinese women's team features world number one Wang Yihan, number two Wang Xin and fourth-ranked Wang Shixian.

"We came here prepared to retain both Cups and that is just what we intend to do," said coach Li.
