Malaysian Bird Flu Hasn't Spread to Terengganu, Official Says

By Soraya Permatasari

June 11 (Bloomberg) -- Bird flu in Malaysia hasn't spread to eastern Terengganu state, said Kamaruddin Md Isa, head of the disease control unit at the Malaysian veterinary services department.

A 16-year-old boy was hospitalized yesterday for fever and other avian influenza symptoms after coming into contact with dead poultry in Terengganu, the Star reported today, citing Health Minister Chua Soi Lek.

``We took samples from the farm in Terengganu and they all tested negative for H5N1,'' Kamaruddin said in a telephone interview today. The ducks didn't die of bird flu, he said.

Malaysia found the deadly strain of the virus in poultry after 60 chickens died in the Sungai Buloh area outside the capital Kuala Lumpur on June 2.

The last poultry outbreak in the country was detected in March last year. No human case has been found in Malaysia.

Malaysia to pay out compensation to bird flu-hit poultry breeders

Posted : Mon, 11 Jun 2007 09:56:00GMT

Author : DPA

Kuala Lumpur - Malaysia announced Monday that it would pay 80,000 ringgit (23,529 dollars) to poultry breeders to compensate them for birds culled to contain an outbreak of avian influenza in a village near Kuala Lumpur.

A total of 3,962 chickens, ducks and birds have been culled in Paya Jaras Hilir village, a small settlement in the central state of Selangor, since bird flu was first detected in the area this month, Agriculture Minister Muhyiddin Yassin said.

The compensation to breeders would be given out once the nation is declared free of the bird-flu virus, he said.

"The government will monitor the situation so that the nation can be declared free of bird flu in about one month," Muhyiddin was quoted as saying by the official Bernama news agency.

So far, seven people, including an 11-month-old, have been hospitalized for showing flu-like symptoms after being exposed to infected birds. However, all have so far been cleared of contracting bird flu, Health Minister Chua Soi Lek said Monday.

The deadly H5N1 strain of bird flu was discovered on June 2 after a poultry rearer from Paya Jaras Hilir reported that 60 of his chickens had suddenly died over of three days.

Chua said about 200,000 health officers, veterinary officers and police have been involved in culling in surrounding areas and monitoring residents
.

Bird flu was last detected in the country in March 2006 at a village in the north-eastern state of Kelantan, which borders Thailand.

The country, which has suffered no known human infections from the deadly virus, was officially declared free of bird flu in June 2006.

Flu strikes 2 more in M'sia

KUALA LUMPUR

11-Jun-07

TWO more Malaysians were hospitalised yesterday for possible exposure to bird flu, as authorities tried to quell fears that the first outbreak of the virus in more than a year might not be isolated.

One was a 31-year-old health worker from central Selangor state, where the outbreak was first reported last week, the state Bernama news agency quoted Health Minister Chua Soi Lek as saying.

Both he and a 16-year-old boy from eastern Terengganu state had flu-like symptoms including high fevers and coughs, the minister said, adding that the teen had had "contact with chicken and ducks that he reared which had died".Chua said officials from the Terengganu state veterinary department had taken samples from the dead birds in the teen's village. Results were to be revealed today.

Last week, bird flu resurfaced in Malaysia for the first time in more than a year, in the Sungai Buloh area of Selangor state on the western outskirts of the capital Kuala Lumpur.

Eleven people were hospitalised with flu-like symptoms after being exposed to dead chickens in the Sungai Buloh area and in a village in northern Kedah state, but all tested negative for the deadly H5N1 strain of the virus.

Health officials said yesterday they had nearly completed the culling of thousands of birds in Selangor state, but were still investigating the source of the outbreak.

"It could be a case of illegal entry of infected birds" from Indonesia and other neighbouring countries, said Kamarudin Mohammed Isa, head of disease control at the local Department of Veterinary Services.

Malaysia reported outbreaks of the deadly H5N1 strain of the virus in February 2006 when it appeared in free-range chickens near Kuala Lumpur, triggering the slaughter of tens of thousands of birds.AFP

Man hospitalised with signs of flu

KUALA LUMPUR: A University Malaya Medical Centre employee has been admitted to the Sungai Buloh Hospital with flu-like symptoms.
The 31-year-old man, who has high fever, cough and sore throat, lives in Pangsapuri Subang Suria, 400m from a village in Sungai Buloh where there was an outbreak of bird flu among chickens.

Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek said his condition was stable but he has been isolated.

Five of the seven people admitted to the Sungai Buloh Hospital earlier have been discharged. Dr Chua said the other two were suspected to have dengue fever.

Four other people admitted to hospital ? two each in Alor Star and Malacca ? have also been sent home.
A 16-year-old boy admitted to the Kuala Terengganu Hospital on Saturday after coming into contact with a dead chicken and a duck in Seberang Takir, Kuala Terengganu, is still in isolation.

The bird flu outbreak was detected by health officials on June 2 following the death of more than 60 chickens in Kampung Paya Jaras Hilir in Sungai Buloh.

Dr Chua said 30 people were classified as "patients under investigation" in Kampung Paya Jaras Hilir. Those who had come into contact with dead chickens but showed no sign of sickness would remain under "home quarantine" for a week.

Health officials have called off the search for suspected victims of bird flu after checks on 4,608 people in 768 houses within a 300m radius of the outbreak area found them free of the disease.

Veterinary Services Department director-general Datuk Dr Abdul Aziz Jamaluddin said about 4,000 chickens were culled as of yesterday.

He said villagers who did not turn over their chickens starting today would not be compensated if the birds were taken from them and destroyed.

Village security and development committee chairman of Kampung Paya Jaras Hilir, Safiee Lisut, said the culling would continue for a week.

"We caught another 12 chickens yesterday but we did not find any fighting cocks," Safiee said.

Humans Unaffected By Recent Bird Flu Outbreak, Says Health Minister

KUALA LUMPUR, June 11 (Bernama) --

The Health Ministry has confirmed
that all the 46 people monitored for suspected bird flu in Selangor,
Kedah, Terengganu and Melaka since Tuesday were not infected by the
H5N1 virus.

Minister Datuk Dr Chua Soi Lek said they were only categorised as
patients under investigation because they did not display the normal
symptoms of bird flu infection.

He said 30 of them were monitored in their homes and the rest at the
hospitals where they had been admitted.

"Of the 16 placed in isolation wards, 11 were confirmed to be
negative. Of these, nine were allowed to return home and two have
been placed in the normal ward.

"Only four people from Kampung Paya Jaras Hilir, Sungai Buloh, are
still being kept in isolation. They are in stable condition and are
waiting for the results of tests done before being allowed to go
home," he said
.

The H5N1 virus surfaced in Kampung Paya Jaras Hilir on June 2,
causing 3,962 chickens, ducks and other birds in the village to be
culled by the Veterinary Services Department.

Dr Chua said crisis management operations rooms were opened up
simultaneously on Thursday at the Selangor Health Department,
Petaling Health Office and Sungai Buloh Hospital and coordinated by
the Disease Control Division of the ministry in Putrajaya to combat
the outbreak.

The centre can be contacted at 03-8881 0600 or 03-8881 0700.

In KUALA TERENGGANU, siblings Mohd Yassir Arafad, 16, and Mohd
Khairul Izwan, 13, who were admitted to the Sultanah Nur Zahirah
Hospital for suspected bird flu, have been declared to be free of
the virus
.

Yassir, a Form Four student of Sekolah Menengah Ibrahim Fikri, and
Khairul, who were admitted after complaining of fever on Saturday,
returned home at 1.45 pm today.

Their father, Johari Yahya, 48, a Kuala Terengganu Municipal Council
employee, said he was thankful and happy that his children are free
of the virus.

"This is good news indeed and it means that my family will no longer
be quarantined and I can return to work tomorrow," he told Bernama.

Johari said the family planned to hold a "kenduri" (feast) to thank
God for good fortune and for having spared them from the deadly
virus.

Four Malaysians in hospital for bird flu checks

Four people are in hospital in Terengganu state after possible exposure to bird flu, Malaysia's health minister said Monday as officials monitored for new outbreaks of the deadly virus.

Chua Soi Lek said the four were hospitalised in the eastern state's capital Kuala Terengganu after coming down with fevers and coughs.

"They have had contact with chickens and ducks which had died. They are currently in a stable condition and are being investigated for the avian flu virus," Chua said in a statement.

"All of the cases do not meet the criteria to be categorised as cases that are suspected to be infected with avian influenza," he added.

Kamarudin Mohammed Isa, head of disease control at the local Department of Veterinary Services, said tests had been conducted on chickens in the village of Seberang Takir, where the four people live, but no bird flu had been found.

"Only two ducks died. They also have other chickens so we took samples from the chickens and they were all negative," Kamarudin told AFP.

Health officials told AFP the four, including a 16-year-old boy, were hospitalised over the weekend but it was unlikely they had bird flu.

Malaysia last week suffered its first outbreak of the deadly virus in more than a year on the western outskirts of Kuala Lumpur in central Selangor state.

Eleven people were hospitalised with flu-like symptoms after being exposed to dead chickens in the Sungai Buloh area and in a village in northern Kedah state, but all tested negative for the deadly H5N1 strain of the virus.

One person is still under observation in hospital in Sungai Buloh, health officials said Monday.

Kamarudin said mopping up operations were continuing Monday in Sungai Buloh but that culling of fowl in the area had stopped.

He said authorities were still trying to pinpoint the origin of the infection, but denied the virus had been spread by migratory birds.

"It's the off season," Kamarudin said, adding monitoring continued throughout the country.

The veterinary services department said Monday 4,127 birds had been culled, 1,430 eggs destroyed and 1,139 premises checked within a one kilometre (half a mile) radius from where the outbreak began in Sungai Buloh.

Samples from nearly 6,700 fowl outside the outbreak zone showed no presence of the virus, it said in a statement.
