KUALA LUMPUR, July 5 — The Ministry of Health added 923 Covid-19 patients in the public healthcare system’s near-maxed out intensive care units (ICU) today, the highest recorded in a single day to date.

Today is the second day in a row MOH has registered ICU cases over 910. Yesterday, the ministry said 917 patients had required intensive care.

Today’s number of patients requiring ventilators were also at a staggering rate of 433, the ministry revealed in a tweet this evening.

This comes as daily Covid-19 cases rose to 6,387 from a slightly lower figure yesterday, Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah announced today.

KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA -- When Mohamad Nor Abdullah put a white flag outside his window late at night, he didn't expect the swift outpouring of support. By morning, dozens of strangers knocked on his door, offering food, cash and encouragement.

Malaysia's nationwide lockdown to curb a coronavirus surge was tightened further on Saturday, banning people in certain areas from leaving their homes except to buy food and necessities.

It lurched Mohamad Nor into desperation. He ekes out a living by selling packed nasi lemak, a popular dish of coconut milk rice with condiments, at a roadside stall every morning, but that income has vanished and government aid was insufficient.

The white flag campaign that emerged on social media last week aims to help people like Mohamad Nor, who is 29 and was born without arms. By chance, he saw the campaign on Facebook and decided to try to seek help.

"It was so unexpected. So many people reached out to help, support and also encouraged me," Mohamad Nor said, sitting in his dingy room amid boxes of biscuits, rice, cooking oil and water that were swiftly donated to him. He said kind Samaritans offered to help pay his room rental and that the assistance should be enough to tide him through the next few months.

The #benderaputih campaign began as Malaysian society's response to rising suicides believed linked to economic hardships caused by the pandemic. Police reported 468 suicides in the first five months this year, an average of four a day and up sharply from 631 for the whole of 2020.

Social media posts urged people to hoist a white flag or cloth to signal they needed immediate help "without having to beg or feel embarrassed." Scores of food retailers and celebrities have responded with offers of help and many Malaysians have driven around their neighborhood to find white flags...

(Fighting New Coronary Pneumonia) More than 200 staff at a vaccination site in Malaysia diagnosed
Chinanews.com, Kuala Lumpur, July 13 (Reporter Chen Yue) Malaysia’s Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, Hayri Jamaluddin, confirmed on the 13th that there are 204 new crown vaccination sites in the Shah Alam Convention and Exhibition Center in the country. The staff were diagnosed with new coronary pneumonia, accounting for nearly half of the staff of the center.
The vaccination site was first diagnosed by two volunteers, and then the Ma Health Department conducted a comprehensive screening of 453 staff at the vaccination site. Officials in Malaysia pointed out that the CT value of the confirmed staff is higher than 35, which may be less contagious.
Jamalodin pointed out that the center had been closed for disinfection on the 13th for one day, and a new batch of staff will be replaced afterwards. He also urged people who went to the vaccination site for vaccination from 4pm to 12th to conduct self-observation at home, and to go for testing if they develop symptoms.
The minister also stated that the monitoring of the vaccination site will be strengthened to ensure the health of the people who are subsequently vaccinated.
The Malaysian government is currently vigorously promoting vaccination, with 420,000 doses in a single day on the 12th. The Shah Alam Convention and Exhibition Center vaccination site is the country's largest vaccination site. According to local media reports, on the 13th, there were 6,000 people who had originally made an appointment to go to the vaccination site for vaccination.
