KUCHING, March 6 — A total of four or 67 per cent of the six human rabies cases reported in Sarawak this year were fatal, said Deputy Premier of Sarawak Datuk Sri Dr Sim Kui Hian.

The Public Health, Housing and Local Government Minister said the deaths occurred in Sibu, Kanowit, Siburan, and Bintulu.

... He said 2,210 bite cases were reported in Sarawak between Jan 1 and March 5 this year, of which 1,205 were dog bites, 985 cat bites, and 20 other bite cases.

Sarawak records 9 rabies deaths so far this year

KUCHING - A total of 11 rabies cases among humans, including nine deaths, were reported in Malaysia’s eastern state of Sarawak from Jan 1 to May 15 this year.

That’s according to a report by the Bernama news agency.

Health director-general Muhammad Radzi Abu Hassan said that of the 11 cases, four each were from Sibu and Serian divisions, two from Kuching division and one from Bintulu division.

Eight of the cases have a history of the victims being bitten by dogs and two were being bitten or scratched by cats, he added in a statement on May 16.

Dr Muhammad Radzi said the total number of rabies cases among humans in the state, since the outbreak was declared in July 2017, was 66 cases with 59 deaths.

Sarawak reactivates ‘disaster’ status on rabies outbreak

PETALING JAYA: Sarawak’s disaster management committee (SDMC) has reactivated the “disaster” status on the rabies outbreak in the state after a rise in cases recently.

Food industry, commodities and regional development minister Stephen Rundi Utom said he had met deputy premier Douglas Uggah Embas earlier today, who agreed on declaring the rabies outbreak a “disaster”.

As of May 13, 11 cases of rabies involving humans have been recorded in Sarawak this year. Nine of the victims have died.
