Perak state in northern Malaysia declared free of bird flu
April 28, 2006
Malaysian local authorities on Thursday declared its northern state of Perak free of bird flu infections.
Perak Menteri Besar (a title similar to "Chief Minister") Tajol Rosli Ghazali made the announcement after two tests on 1,300 samples of birds showed negative of the H5N1 strain of virus.
Tajol Rosli expressed his hope that this announcement will help Singapore to lift its ban on imports of chickens and ducks from the state.
Since bird flu cases were reported in four places in Perak this March, a total of 53,662 birds and 6,279 eggs had been destroyed in the state.
As another blow to the poultry industry, Singapore has suspended import of poultry from Perak, which previously supplied about 450,000 ducks a month to the city republic.
