Re: Malaysia, Malacca Chicken Manure Causes Sheep Deaths

I'm a little stumped by this one. While I know even the thought of manure could make people sick, and thus the smell certainly would, I'm not sure how that would kill sheep. Maybe the sheep are being killed by exposure to some chemical used in the process of drying maure?

The man from Johor who fainted on a flight:

KUCHING: A Kuala Lumpur-bound AirAsia flight from Sandakan, Sabah, was forced to make an emergency landing here after a passenger fainted on board.

The unidentified 30-year-old man from Johor was rushed by ambulance to the Sarawak General Hospital at 2pm yesterday.

The hospital authorities are treating him as a suspected influenza A (H1N1) patient as he had a fever.

The man, who was still unconscious on arrival at the hospital, had travelled to Sandakan with two other friends on a business trip last Friday.

According to one of his friends, who declined to be named, the man had sustained serious head wounds in a road accident a year ago but it was not known if the fainting spell was linked to the past injury.

He said the man had not travelled abroad in recent months.

Was a partner in a fertiliser business. I have not been able to find an update on this patient.

KUCHING: An AirAsia flight from Sandakan to Kuala Lumpur was diverted to the Kuching International Airport after a passenger with high fever fainted during the flight
Paramedics from the Sarawak General Hospital (SGH), in full body protection gear against Influenza A (H1N1) virus, rushed to the airport to pick up the 30-year-old man from Johor Bahru.
The man was immediately sent to the SGH and wheeled into the Red Zone isolation area at 2.07 pm.
According to two business partners of the man, they board the KL-bound flight in Sandakan at 10.30 am. About one hour into the flight, their friend suddenly collapsed with high fever.
From what I know, the captain informed the flight control tower at KIA 40 minutes before we landed. After the plane landed, we were told to wait for 20 minutes in the plane, said one of them.
The three partners, all from Johor Baharu, took a flight to Sandakan from KL last Friday to attend to some business deals. They are in the fertiliser business.
According to two of them, who refused to be identified, they did not travel abroad recently, and their friend had suffered head injuries in an accident a year ago.
The plane continued its flight to KL without the three partners.
Meanwhile, a youth, who is said to be among the passengers of the flight boarded by first confirmed influenza victim, checked himself at the Sarawak General Hospital at about 1.00 pm yesterday.
The youth, who was not sick, said he was just taking precaution as the first confirmed victim was his friend.
So far, five people had checked with the Sarawak General Hospital and three of them were tested negative for Influenza A.

Re: Malaysia, Malacca Chicken Manure Causes Sheep Deaths

Is this the same fainting on a flight from Johor we dealt with two weeks ago? I think it must be. The last article doesn't seem to have dates, but the previous one is 5/18. I file this one under "No news is good news - if he was still hospitalized or had died or had tested positive for something odd, I think we'd have heard.

I think the fertilizer link is interesting, but the head injury also seems relevant. The first article mentions an ILLEGAL fertilizer operation, which is probably much more crude that a legal one. Also, the manure incident is in Malacca, not Johor.

Yes - this is the old article. If there is something viral in chicken manure - it may well be widespread. There are reports in surrounding countries of H5N1 outbreaks, there is no reason to expect that Malaysia will be completely without this virus and/or others. I have not heard of sheep being infected by an avian virus - but - if other mammals can.....

I think the individuals mentioned in the first article are not nearly sick enough to suspect H5N1. And with all the reporting out of Malaysia, we certainly would have heard about H5N1 - I'm sure they test for it.

I think you might have found something unique though as far as fertilizer goes. I wonder if some chemical used in producing fertilizer, perhaps an illegal chemical, would produce a long-term (the first article mentioned "medicine from time to time", and the Johor man was ill for about a year) chronic illness with symptoms of fever fainting.

We also don't know that this man's fertilizer business is from chicken manure. There are lots of other animals whose manure is used as fertilizer.

Re: Malaysia, Malacca Chicken Manure Causes Sheep Deaths

Agreed - there is no reference to people becoming very ill.
There is also no indication as to when the sheep died - or whether it was very sudden. It would be good to know - but I don't think any reporter is going to go out of their way to investigate sheep! I think it would be a good idea to make a mental log of this idea that fertiliser may well be causing unexpected illnesses. It would not be something that immediately sprang to mind if there was an outbreak of - anything. Every agricultural enterprise will be using some form of fertiliser, therefore, many people may be exposed.

Re: Malaysia, Malacca Chicken Manure Causes Sheep Deaths

I think the first article mentions 6 years. This seems to have been a long term problem.

I wonder if anyone at FT has enough knowledge of how manure is turned into fertilizer to know what chemicals would be involved. I suspect there is some pasteurization involved as well, so any bacterial or viral agent would likely be neutralized.

But I am definitely making a mental note of that the PRODUCTION of fertilizer might produce unexplained illnesses.

Re: Malaysia, Malacca Chicken Manure Causes Sheep Deaths

Did we ever get an update on that nonsense "non-contagious meningitis" reported death in Johor? The one with the schizophrenic school teacher?

Re: Malaysia, Malacca Chicken Manure Causes Sheep Deaths

I live in a rural community and, if Malaysia is anything like over here, you get the manure from the "source" and dump it on your land and dig it in. Simple as that. I can't understand why they would be stockpiling it, upon reflection, there has been a global shortage of fertilizer and the price has been very high for a number of years. It would contaminate the water supply, (and waste,) the manure to leave it sitting in the rain. It seems counter-productive.

Re: Malaysia, Malacca Chicken Manure Causes Sheep Deaths

I believe that in industrial countries at least, manure is pasteurized. It is possible that unethical businessmen might try to save money by applying a toxic chemical instead of heat. Actually, the sheep deaths alone could simply be caused by salmonella and other fecal pathogens spread by not sterilizing the manure.

I thought of a bizarre explanation here. Has anyone tested any of these cases for meliodosis? This is a soil-borne, bacterial disease that is common in SE Asia and difficult to diagnose. Production of fertilizer would involve exposure to soil, and this disease can produce bizarre symptoms, sometimes with an incubation period of months or more. It is also notoriously difficult to detect. It can be fatal, and it can also be chronice.
