Government hospitals may extend operating hours

On another matter, he advised the public to be careful when swimming at waterfalls and ponds following the recent death of a 23-year-old man from leptospirosis, which was spread through rat urine.

?We must ensure that the water that we drink and bathe in is not contaminated with rat urine. We should also exercise caution when going for a swim at the waterfalls and ponds,? he said.

On Saturday, Abu Hanifah Redzuan, a film crew member, died from leptospirosis after going for a swim with his family at the Lata Bayu Waterfalls in Baling, Kedah, on May 4.

He was said to have had high fever for over a week before passing away at the Sultan Abdul Halim Hospital in Sungai Petani. His six family members are still warded in various hospitals.

SHAH ALAM: LEPTOSPIROSIS has claimed another victim, this time, a 21-year-old Universiti Teknologi Mara Shah Alam student.
Megat Hafiqh Hakimi Zulffrida, the son of Bernama Radio programming head Hakimi Zulffrida Mohd Zain, succumbed to the disease at 10am yesterday after suffering multiple organ failure.
His grandmother, Hasnah Abu Kasim, 72, said Megat, who was her eldest grandson, was admitted to Putrajaya Hospital last Thursday.
"He went into a coma two days later and we did not know for sure where he contracted the disease.

Nine deaths from ?rat urine disease?

SIBU: Leptospirosis or ?rat urine disease? has claimed a total of nine lives in the state thus far where the total number of reported cases stands at 112.
According to the statistics from the state Health Department?s Communicable Disease Control Section (CPRC), for epidemiology week 19 (of 2013), one death each was recorded in Serian, Bintulu, Pakan, Mukah, Bau, Sibu and Lundu while Miri reported two deaths.
Bintulu division had the highest reported cases at 30 followed by Miri (20); Kapit (19); Kuching (13); Samarahan (seven); Sri Aman (three); Betong (one); Sarikei (six); Mukah (three), Sibu (six) and Limbang (four).

Seven deaths, 122 cases of rat urine infection so far in Kelantan

There have been 122 cases of rat urine infection (leptospirosis)and seven deaths recorded in Kelantan June 10 this year, showing an increase over 2011 and 2012 figures.

Kelantan director of health Datuk Ahmad Razin Ahmad Maher said the number of deaths was the highest since the compulsory reporting of cases was gazetted in December 2010.
