Khaled: No word from over 2,100 students in Japan

JOHOR BARU: More than 2,100 Malaysian students currently studying in various parts of Japan have yet to be traced following the massive earthquake that hit the country on Friday.

Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin said so far only 300 students have been traced.

?Currently, 2,465 Malaysian students are studying in Japan, of which 1,327 are Public Services Department and Higher Education Ministry-sponsored students,? he said.

The rest, he added, were students sponsored by the Japanese government (201) and those who are self-financed (937). These groups were not previously registered with the embassy.

Malaysians in Japan urged to update status on Internet

PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Students' Association in Japan has put up a spreadsheet on the Internet containing the names of Malaysians in Japan for status updates.

Association president 'Awadh Asyraf Supri called for all Malaysians studying or working in Japan to register themselves on the spreadsheet so others would know they were safe.

"The embassy has been receiving countless calls from worried families and we are helping the families find out if their loved ones are alright.

"Even those who are back home in Malaysia or in other countries should register so we are sure you are safe," said 'Awadh.

Visit the Malaysian Students' Association in Japan's website to fill up the form which will be updated to the spreadsheet.
