KUALA LUMPUR, April 30 (Bernama) -- Another report of a fatality linked to the influenza A (H1N1) virus has been received by the Health Ministry Friday, said the Director-General of Health, Tan Sri Dr Mohd Ismail Merican.

However, he said, the cause of death was not due to H1N1 infection directly.

"This has resulted in the cumulative total for H1N1 fatalities to date remaining unchanged at 81 deaths," he said in a statement.

The deceased was a 40-year-old man who had hypertension and was involved in an accident one week before he was admitted into the ward.

Dr Mohd Ismail said although the case was confirmed positive for H1N1 virus infection, the victim was also suffering from bacterial infection in the blood and the death was due to complication following septic shock with multi-organs failure and not due to the H1N1 virus directly.

Malacca teacher dies from H1N1

MALACCA: A 50-year-old teacher from Batu Berendam near here died from influenza A (H1N1) yesterday.

Siti Khatijah Mat, who was a special education coordinator at Sekolah Kebangsaan Cheng, died at 5.15am, six days after she was warded at the Malacca Hospital.

Her husband, Zulkefli Johar, 50, said his wife was earlier admitted at a private medical centre for two weeks after complaining of headaches and fever.

"During that time, she underwent blood tests, including for dengue fever, which were all negative. However, there was no improvement in her condition and she became worse.

"I then had her transferred to Malacca Hospital last Wednesday."

Dr Ismail said all the children had been ordered to be quarantined at their homes.

Another 46 children who come in contact with the others are being monitored.

Re: Malaysia:H1N1 related deaths in 2010

KUALA LUMPUR - A 41-year-old pregnant woman in Penang has become the latest victim of influenza A (H1N1), bringing the death toll to 87 since the outbreak began last year.

The woman, who was 30 weeks' pregnant and expecting her third child, was admitted to Penang Hospital on May 12. She had fever, cough and breathing difficulties.

Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Ismail Merican said the difficulty in breathing was because she had severe pneumonia. Doctors did their best to save her and her foetus, but failed, he added.

"I have repeatedly advised people who have symptoms of the disease, especially those in the high-risk group and pregnant women, to get treatment early. Delay leads to complications and death."

He said even healthy people could succumb to the disease if they did not seek treatment early.

There were 26 positive cases reported as of 5.30pm on Tuesday, with the number of confirmed cases now rising to 14,718.

There are also 573 people, including 40 with H1N1, admitted in public and private hospitals nationwide.
