Domestic pigs in Pitas infected with African Swine Flu

KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah Department of Veterinary Services has linked the recent deaths of scores of pigs in Pitas district to a possible outbreak of the deadly African swine fever.

However, Deputy Chief Minister cum Agriculture and Fisheries Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Dr Jeffrey Kitingan said further tests will still have to be carried out to confirm it.

“Initial tests showed that eight of the 13 samples collected from the pigs in Pitas showed positive results for ASF. Currently, the Department of Veterinary Services in Putrajaya is conducting the confirmatory tests for this disease via DNA sequencing and we should be able to get the results in a day or two,” he said in a statement here today...

EN: The first reported case involved wild boar mortality. Following the
death of wild boar in Kinabatangan (which tested negative with
conventional PCR by Sabah Department of Veterinary Services Laboratory),
the disease investigation was extended to the neighboring district, where
the first case of mortality involving backyard pigs in Pitas was reported.
After the laboratory confirmation, the surveillance is intensified and
extended to other districts encompassing the 50 km radius from the index
case. Sabah Wildlife Department reported on the wild boar mortality in
Beluran district, where samples were taken and found positive for African
swine fever. Surveillance then expanded outside the containment zone to
cover the whole Sabah State. Currently, surveillance is conducted and
intensified in the whole country.

Pig virus spreads to other districts

KOTA KINABALU: The African Swine Fever (ASF) virus has now spread to other districts, infecting both domestic pigs and their cousins, the wild bearded pigs.

In a statement here today, Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Dr Jeffrey Kitingan said the virus was detected among domestic pigs in Kota Marudu and Pitas as well as wild bearded pigs in Lahad Datu, Sandakan, Kinabatangan, Beluran and Telupid.

“This includes the case of a dead wild bearded pig at a resort in the Kinabatangan district which went viral on social media last week,” he said.

Fortunately, he said commercial pig farms in Tawau, Sandakan, Tenom, Papar, Tuaran and Penampang that supply most Sabah’s pork products are still free of the ASF virus...

KOTA KINABALU: The African Swine Fever (ASF) virus has now spread widely among the vulnerable Bornean bearded pigs with at least 128 confirmed deaths.

Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Dr Jeffrey Kitingan in a statement here today said the government fears for the survival of the species especially because the population of the Bornean bearded pigs is already declining.

?I am concerned the ASF will further decrease their population at a much faster rate,? he said...

KOTA KINABALU: The first case of African Swine Fever (ASF) has been detected in an interior district in Sabah since the January outbreak that affected mainly the northern and eastern parts of the state.

The State Veterinary Services Department (DVS) has reported at least one case of ASF in the interior Nabawan, bringing the number of affected districts to 10.

Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Seri Dr Jeffrey Kitingan said that as of April 18, a total of 169 wild bearded pigs had been confirmed positive for ASF.

?In addition, we have culled 398 head of backyard pigs while 535 have died because of the fever...

EPIDEMIOLOGICAL COMMENTS
Genotype 2 was identified. The first reported case involved wild boar mortality. Following the death of wild boar in sub district Bidor within District of Batang Padang, Perak state, the disease investigation was extended to the neighboring sub district, Sungkai, where there were mortality involving wild boar reported. After the laboratory confirmation, the Department of Veterinary Services (DVS) is intensively conducting the control measures at the infected area, enhance public awareness and surveillance throughout the country. The whole swine industry players in Malaysia are all vigilant and DVS has urged them to strengthen their farm biosecurity. Epidemiological investigation still on going to conclude the source of infection.
