Malaysia records first polio case after 27 years

Health Ministry director-secretary Noor Hisham Abdullah said Malaysia has recorded its first polio case after the disease was absent for some 27 years.

"The Health Ministry regrets to inform there has been a confirmed case of poliovirus infection in Malaysia, after being free of the disease for 27 years.

"The case involved a three-year-old Malaysian male toddler from Tuaran, Sabah who experienced fever followed by body weakness and was admitted to the intensive care unit," he said in a press statement.

Noor Hisham said it was confirmed that the toddler was suffering from circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus type 1 (cVDPV 1).

Two more polio cases confirmed in Malaysia's Sabah state

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan. 10 (Xinhua) -- Two more cases of polio have been confirmed in the Malaysia's northern Borneo state of Sabah, health authorities said on Friday, bringing the total number of cases to three since the disease made a comeback in December 2019 after 27 years.

The two patients, aged 11 and 8 respectively, had not been immunized since birth and were discovered as part of a surveillance after a three-month-old Malaysian boy in Sabah was found to have polio last December, Health Ministry director-general Noor Hisham Abdullah said.

"With the confirmation of the two latest polio cases, it makes three positive polio cases in Sabah. All of the patients are still receiving treatment in hospital and are stable," he said...

New polio case found in Sandakan: Health DG

The Health Ministry has detected a new case of polio involving an undocumented three-year-old boy in Sandakan, Sabah.

“The child has never received the polio vaccine since birth.

“The child experienced weakness in his left leg on Jan 18, 2020, and was treated at the hospital and is now in a stable condition.

“The case was confirmed to be polio by the World Health Organisation referral laboratory in Australia on March 5, 2020,” said Health Ministry director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah in a statement today.

As of March 8, 2020, he said there have been four confirmed cases of polio in Sabah...
