Diphtheria claims third death in Malaysia, this time in Sabah

KOTA KINABALU: Malaysia has recorded its third death from diphtheria, this time involving a three-year-old boy from Menggatal.
This marks the third such death in the country, after two children's fatalities were recorded from 11 diphtheria cases in Kedah and Malacca recently...

Three diphtheria deaths in Sabah

Kota Kinabalu: Awareness on the importance of completing vaccination schedule of children has been stepped up following three diphtheria related deaths in Sabah.

As of July 4, there were 14 diphtheria cases and five deaths in the country, according to Director-General of Health Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.

Four cases were recorded in Sabah (three deaths), seven in Kedah (one death) and three in Malacca (one death).

Unlike in Sabah, where the cases were sporadic, the cases in Kedah and Malacca involved children whose parents refused vaccination.

In Sabah, the inoculation schedule prepared by government hospital for children up to 18 months old comprises the Bacillus Calmette Guerin (BCG) immunisation, Hepatitis B, diphtheria, tetanus, whooping cough, measles, Haemophilus influenzae type B, mumps and rubella.

State Health Department director Dr Christina Rundi said there was unlikely to be any organised movement opposing vaccination programmes in Sabah.

"The cases here are sporadic and not considered an outbreak, but we are on alert following the deaths." ...

Three Year Old From Selangor Contracts Diphtheria

KUALA LUMPUR: A diphtheria case involving a three year-old has been reported by the Selangor State Health Department, said the Ministry of Health (MOH).

Health director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah in a statement today said the child had not been immunised against diphtheria, as the family practiced homeopathy treatment.

?This child started experiencing fever, cough and vomiting since Aug 13. The patient was taken to the Sungai Buloh Hospital on Thursday (August 18) due to shortness of breath, and was then admitted to the intensive care unit for treatment and close supervision...

...Noor Hisham said there were now 27 confirmed number of diphteria cases in Malaysia, including five related deaths.
