2009/10/12

One hundred and forty five people with Influenza-Like Illness (ILI) symptoms have been hospitalised for treatment throughout the country while 120 patients were discharged making the total number of patients being treated in 77 hospitals in the country a total of 660.

Health Director-General Tan Sri Dr Mohd Ismail Merican in a statement here today said of that number only 29 patients or four per cent were Influenza A (H1N1) cases confirmed through laboratory tests.

"Of the 29 Influenza A (H1N1) patients receiving treatment nine or 31 per cent were in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

"Today, there was a new case in the ICU and no patient was discharged," he said in the statement issued by the Health Ministry.

Dr Mohd Ismail confirmed that there was no new death registered due to the Influenza A (H1N1) virus making the number of deaths remain at 77 people.

Dr Mohd Ismail said globally till Oct 4, the World Health Organisation (WHO) reported more than 378,223 cases confirmed for Influenza A (H1N1) with 4,525 deaths.

He added that with the Penilaian Menengah Rendah (PMR) examination going on the ministry advised parents and guardians to constantly monitor the health of their children and inform school authorities if necessary.

"We also ask for the cooperation of invigilators to isolate students who have ILI symptoms and make sure they wear masks," he added.

Eventhough reports of Influenza A (H1N1) showed a decline, Dr Mohd Ismail stressed that people should take preventive measures as the virus was still active in the community.
